The Tang Priest learned thousands of Buddhist scriptures from the Western Heaven, but why did he lose to Zen Huineng who only had one?

Because the Six-phase Tanjing written by Zen Huineng is more accepted by the world, Xuanzang's scriptures are more about the original ideas and thoughts of Buddhism in the West. The Six-phase Tanjing advocates that all beings have Buddha nature, and as long as they have an epiphany, they can understand the meaning of Buddhism.

The reason why Xuanzang went to the Western Heaven to learn Buddhist scriptures is that the theory of geography in the north is different from that of photography in the south. The purpose is that Xuanzang wants to integrate them, better study and develop Buddhism, erase this difference in the history of Buddhism in China, and finally form a unity. Therefore, Xuanzang applied to Emperor Taizong for the Buddhist paradise. After his return from Buddhist scriptures, he brought back 657 Buddhist scriptures, which made great contributions to the study of primitive Buddhist scriptures.

Huineng believes that the Six Phases Tanjing recorded by disciples is extremely important to the development of Buddhism. Huineng founded Nanzong, and his understanding and feeling of Buddhism is to combine obscure Buddhism with the universal moral values of China people. Therefore, the Buddhism described by Huineng in Six Phases Tanjing can be better spread to ordinary people, more deeply rooted in people's hearts, and cause * * * sound. This does not require any talent for Buddhist epiphany, nor does it take time to understand. Huineng makes Buddhism easier to understand.

Comparatively speaking, many Buddhist scriptures brought back by Xuanzang from the Western Heaven are of high historical research value, which means that they may have been compiled at the beginning of their establishment. Then these Buddhist teachings are simply gobbledygook for ordinary people. Even if Xuanzang is familiar with the three classics and can translate them, the threshold is still there. Not only do people prefer to read simple Buddhist books, but those in power do not want their country's religion to be too obscure and abstruse.
