How to start creating your own cartoons?

Once upon a time, I was also a comic book fan, fantasizing about creating my own comics.

The creation of cartoons usually goes through four processes: determining the form of cartoons-shaping the story of characters-drawing cartoons-publishing cartoons.

Decide the script and form of comics

Decide the story you want to draw.

First, decide what the story in the cartoon is. You don't need to show every detail of the story in the script, but you must have a basic concept of the progress of the story. This will ensure that you have enough material to draw after you start.

If you don't just want to draw a cartoon of "smile every day", you must list the types of jokes you want to tell. This can help you decide what kind of characters there are in the joke and how many.

Decide the form of comics. If you plan to draw a cartoon in single row or double row, you need to decide the average number of squares in each row first. Single-row comics like Garfield are usually three or four squares. And double-row comics like Desert Island Cry are usually 6 to 8 squares.

Adjust the contents of each cell. When you start making your own cartoons, you need to think about the content of each grid and write it down. You need to know what happened here and who will show up. Follow the simplest rules. The simpler the script, the better.

Balance the proportion of text and pictures. Make sure not to put too much text in the grid. This will make comics ugly, which is the fun of reading comics. Control the bubbles with dialogue to two (if a dialog box has only one word, there can be three dialogues), and the number of words in each dialog box should not exceed 30, preferably not more than 20.

Create a role

Let the characters have hope and dreams. Let the characters get their places. Having a goal in life is an important way to promote the development of the story, especially when you don't know how to make the story develop.

Set some shortcomings for the characters. There is no need to portray the characters perfectly, which will make readers feel unreal and boring. If you want readers to sympathize with and support your characters, add some shortcomings to them.

Your character may be greedy, talkative, rude, selfish, or obviously more stupid than the average person.

Materialize characters. Add background, interests, and other things that reflect your character's real life. This makes the characters look more real and reliable.

Draw comics

Draw a border. Draw a sketch of the border first.

Draw a sketch of a character. Draw a sketch where the characters are arranged, making sure to leave enough space for the dialog box.

Add a dialog box. Draw a dialog box on the sketch.

Sketch the background and scene. After arranging the position of the characters, you can draw the background and other things on the sketch.

Draw a line. Draw lines on the sketch with a dark permanent pen.

Complement words. After the painting is basically completed, you can add lines to the dialog box. Make sure to use a fixed font and font size.

Color. If you think it is necessary, you can color the cartoon.

Publish cartoons

It is very difficult to publish a cartoon in a paper publication and an unknown cartoon in a newspaper, so be prepared psychologically.

Publish your own cartoons on the Internet. If you want to have a large audience, have more say in your works and have more control over the remuneration, then you can choose to publish your works on the Internet.

Use the website. There are many websites dedicated to comics. Just like starting a blog, you can set up your own page so that people can browse your works on this page, and it is easy to update on this page. This is a good way for people who have just started publishing comics. Such popular websites include "SmackJeeves" and "ComicFury".

Make a website. You can also make your own website, so you can have more control over the content of the website, but it will also bring more workload. Don't do this unless you are confident that you can make a beautiful and easy-to-use website, or you just need a little extra help to complete it.
