How to protect baiji dolphin?

1. Ex-situ conservation of baiji: As many baiji as possible will be transferred to semi-natural environment, and its environmental conditions are similar to those of the Yangtze River, which is easy to be controlled and improved manually.

2. Conservation of Baigudolphin's Habitat: Although the environment of the Yangtze River is deteriorating, and this situation is difficult to change in the near future, it is beneficial and necessary to classify the river section with relatively concentrated distribution and suitable environmental conditions as Baigudolphin Nature Reserve for protecting the existing habitat of Baigudolphin and delaying the extinction speed of Baigudolphin.

Once there is a breakthrough in ex situ conservation and captive breeding of baiji in the future, the Yangtze River will still be the first place to reintroduce captive or semi-natural reserve to breed offspring.

Daily activities:

White dolphin is timid by nature, easily frightened, usually far away from ships, and it is difficult for humans to get close. In addition, the population is scarce and the activity area is wide, so the research on its living habits in the wild state is very limited.

The body temperature of baiji is constant, about 36 degrees Celsius. It needs high water temperature, and often stays in a fixed area for a period of time, and then moves to another area after the water temperature changes. They like to form small groups of 2- 16 individuals, and they often swim with finless porpoises, especially during mating.

They habitually inhabit the deep water area in the center of rivers, and also enter the confluence of lakes, tributaries and mainstream. Mainly during the day and rest at night. Timid, shy, rarely close to the shore and ships, but often swim to shallow water in the morning and evening to prey on fish and shrimp. Find food through its own ultrasonic signal and jump on it.
