Changzhi, a prefecture-level city in Shanxi Province, a central city in the southeast of Shanxi Province and one of the sub-central cities in Shanxi Province, was called Shangdang, Luzhou and Lu 'an in ancient times. "Changzhi" was originally the name of the county where Lu 'an Prefecture was located. It was named after the eighth year of Jiajing in Ming Dynasty, which means "long-term stability".

Changzhi is located in the southeast of Shanxi, at the junction of Shanxi, Hebei and Henan provinces, and the whole territory is located in Shangdang Basin surrounded by Taiyue Mountain in Taihang Mountain.
