The first part of the novel "Master Wu Xin" tells the story of what happened to Wu Xin during the melee war between warlords in the early Republic of China. Half a piece of cornstarch triggered a love affair.

Yueya is a country girl who ran away from marriage. She ran away from home because she didn’t want to marry Coffin Laozi, who was half pockmarked and half wrinkled. Fleeing to the wasteland, he met Wu Xin. Unable to bear the discomfort of being hungry, Yue Ya gave him half a piece of steamed bun, thus forming a fate.

When the two arrived in Wen County, they accidentally discovered that Master Gu's house was haunted. In the name of exorcising ghosts, they ate, drank and stayed in Gu Xuanwu's headquarters and defrauded money. After being deceived several times, Gu Xuanwu lost his courage and unintentionally exorcised the ghosts. He also unintentionally discovered the secret under the well of Gu's house, broke the formation, and released Yue Qiluo, who had suppressed him for hundreds of years.

Wuxin didn't want to stay with Gu Xuanwu, so he and Yueya rented a large yard outside. Yue Qiluo followed, pretending to be a little girl, and Yue Ya took her in. Wuxin pretended to tease Yue Qiluo, which angered Yueya, and Yueya drove Yue Qiluo out of the yard.

Wu Xin and Yue Ya love each other and prepare to pick a date for the wedding. Unexpectedly, Gu Xuanwu's subordinate Zhang Tuanzhang rebelled and joined forces with Ding Datou to drive Gu Xuanwu away. Gu Xuanwu fled around, fled to Wuxin's yard, and began a life of eating, drinking and living.

Yue Qiluo seduced Wu Xin in the middle of the night, and their heart-to-heart talk collapsed. The two started fighting. Yue Qiluo's face and eyes were stained with martial arts blood, and half of Wu Xin's head was cut off. Wuxin returned home and told her secret. Yue Ya had no sleep all night, but he still accepted Wu Xin and gave him food and drinks.
