Zhang Sanlu is the earliest crosstalk artist recorded in writing. He was originally an octagonal drum clown artist and later changed to crosstalk. It is speculated that his artistic career began during the Daoguang period. He was about forty years older than Zhu Shaowen. When Zhu was in his twenties and thirties, Zhang was already in his sixties or seventies. He is the leader of entertainers in the East and West cities of Beijing. Zhu Shaowen mainly sang "Taiping Lyrics" and then told some jokes to make people laugh. Some of them were learned from Zhang...Zhu called Zhang his teacher.

"Jianghu Congtan" records that "Zhang Sanlu was one of the founders of crosstalk. Later, the crosstalk school was divided into three major schools, one is the Zhu school, the second is the A school, and the third is the Shen school." Whether he has a direct relationship with Zhu, A, Shen, etc. remains to be verified.
