April 1st is a beautiful day! This day is April Fool's Day. People like to fool others on this day to tease others. For example, put food dye in a friend's milk, or stick a coin on the floor and see how many people want to pick it up.

All of these little tricks you can try on a few people. But there is also a tradition of one person trying to fool many people. For example, in 1996, Taco Bell announced that the company had purchased the Liberty Bell and renamed it the Taco Liberty Bell, causing many American citizens to call the government Complain.

The media also broadcast untrue reports to many people. In 1957, the British Broadcasting Corporation reported in a very serious news program that Sweden's macaroni harvest was bad, and showed footage of farmers picking macaroni from trees! Many people took it seriously and wrote to the BBC asking how they could grow their own macaroni. In 1962, a Swedish television station told viewers that, thanks to a new technology, they could turn their black-and-white televisions into color televisions. Viewers simply place a nylon sock over the screen. Thousands of people actually tried it!

Even smart people get fooled sometimes. In 2008, days before the U.S. presidential election, a Canadian called Vice President Sarah Palin and convinced her that he was French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Even when he said, "I can see Belgium from my house," Palin failed to tell in their conversation that the other was joking.
