Secondly, because Koreans know that their country is not a big country, calling themselves the Republic of Korea can satisfy their vanity and indulge themselves to be a big country.

Also, South Korea has always had a tradition of arrogance, a sense of vastness and heroism. Koreans believe that their ancestors once created a glorious history, and Korea has been a real power that makes the world proud since ancient times. Because this cognition is seriously inconsistent with historical facts, the whole world ridiculed South Korea as a "cosmic power". Since we are a "cosmic power", why not call ourselves the Republic of Korea?

In addition to South Korea, some countries like to add the word "big" before the country name. Such as the British Empire and the Great Japanese Empire. However, powerful people generally don't add the word "big" before their names. For example, Americans don't call America a great America, and Russians don't call Russia a great Russia.
