Who is the Imperial Envoy? One of his satirical comedy masterpieces
"The Imperial Envoy" is the representative work of the Russian satirist Gogol, which was published in 1836. The story describes a playboy, Khlestakov, who lost everything in a bet and was at a loss. He was passing through a city in another province from Petersburg and was mistaken for an "imperial minister." This caused panic among the local officials and made many jokes.
The work changed the situation in which the Russian theater world at that time was filled with farces with shallow ideas and vulgar techniques transplanted from France. In "The Imperial Envoy" Gogol used the mirror of comedy to reflect the ugly true colors of the dignitaries of the society at that time, thus exposing the darkness, decadence and absurd reaction of the Russian serfdom society.
