Pingxiang was the throat of Wu Chu in ancient times, and now it is the pearl of western Jiangxi. It is one of the earliest cities in modern China. Since the reform and opening up, the economy has developed rapidly and commerce has flourished. It has become one of the important industrial cities in Jiangxi, with jurisdiction over Luxi County, Shangli County, Lianhua County, Anyuan District and xiangdong district, with a land area of 3823.99Km2 and a population of185.160,000.

Pingxiang is one of the regional central cities in Jiangxi, and it is the first batch of inland open cities, civilized cities and national health cities in China. Pingxiang, as the core area and leading city of Hunan and Jiangxi, is known as the thoroughfare of Hunan and Jiangxi and the throat of Wu Chu. Pingxiang is an ancient cultural city with a history of 1700 years. In modern history, Pingxiang was the birthplace of China Workers' Movement and Autumn Harvest Uprising, the birthplace of Chinese Young Pioneers and the cradle of red scarves.

From 2065438 to March 2005, Pingxiang was selected as the "National Sponge City Construction Pilot City", which is the only approved city with districts in Jiangxi.
