I hope that no one will be bedridden again, so that caregivers can "catch their breath"
My parents can't move easily. How can I take good care of him? : learn 18 diets that take into account human considerations? Excretion? Bathing? Change clothes? Turning over care skills
I entered the world of care at the age of 24 and worked in a special care center for the elderly. It's been 4 years since we came along. Last year, my family also began to need to take care of waiters. The place of work is usually in medical institutions, nursing institutions, convalescent institutions and other social welfare institutions or families, assisting patients, disabled people or people with physical and mental disabilities in their daily life, providing physical and life care and family services). My 9-year-old father and my 88-year-old mother were both recognized as having to receive care. This made me realize that they are about to embark on an unprecedented care process.
forty years ago, most elderly people who needed care were bedridden. At that time, once they fell down due to cerebral hemorrhage, they were all told by doctors that they must rest completely. Not only has the common sense of rehabilitation not been popularized, but even when you want to take a bath, you will be scolded by your doctor. Therefore, even with mild paralysis, elderly people who can stand or walk must stay in bed, which leads to many people suffering from bedsores and eventually developing into dementia.
The special care center for the elderly, where I worked at that time, constantly tried to help the bedridden elderly and was a pioneer in care facilities. Therefore, even though I am a young high school dropout, they are still willing to hire me, which makes me very grateful.
To avoid bedridden elderly people, they must be moved to wheelchairs. At that time, the female attendants, collectively referred to as "housekeepers", just resigned to recuperate because of low back pain, which made the center understaffed for a long time; In other words, they hired me to take charge of the labor work, so I laughed at myself as a "care strongman." At that time, bedridden elderly people developed social problems, and hospitals for the elderly (hospitals that mainly treat and care for the elderly) that injected intravenous drip for bedridden elderly people for a long time began to be criticized by the media.
The hospital is a place for treatment, and its task is to make patients stay in bed and wait for recovery. Curing diseases and enabling patients to take care of themselves are the most urgent tasks. However, it gradually evolved into forcing even the incurable old people to rest. Regrettably, this medical nature has not improved much so far.
therefore, I think, to solve the problem of bedridden, we should introduce the "rehabilitation mechanism". However, the number of physical therapists or occupational therapists in rehabilitation medicine is scarce, and it was impossible to provide rehabilitation treatment for the elderly in the past years.
Later, the number of these two kinds of personnel increased sharply, and I was one of them who obtained the license. Although the rehabilitation of the elderly is the trend of today's society, it also faces new problems: it is not uncommon for the elderly who started to stand and walk according to the instructions of the therapist during rehabilitation to degenerate into bedridden after returning to the living environment such as care center or home.
sawing off the four legs of the bed is more important than rehabilitation
When I started to explore the reasons, I immediately found the crux. This is because even though the physical function of the elderly has been slightly improved through rehabilitation, their living environment is not suitable for "old age life"; Because in our society, "old age" is not taken into account. So I began to hold a "Life Rehabilitation Seminar" for the photographers. The original slogan of the lecture was "sawing off the four legs of the bed is more important than rehabilitation."
medical bed's height and waist are used in hospitals for the convenience of doctors and nurses. However, no matter how many times you get up in the rehabilitation room, once the bed is too high and your feet can't touch the ground, rehabilitation will have no effect. I also often hear people react, hoping to widen the bed. Because the elderly who are old or paralyzed need to lie completely on their back, they must spread their arms out and hold the mattress to get up. No matter how strong the arm is, if the bed is too narrow, you can't apply force.
Although the height of nursing beds has been generally reduced, the width of most nursing beds is still less than that of single beds. Therefore, although many units provide nursing beds for rent, it seems that they cannot support the elderly to take care of themselves, but instead hinder their normal life. If you want to avoid bedridden, besides the needs of the elderly themselves, the environment must also meet the needs.
In addition, these tasks cannot rely on the therapists in the rehabilitation department, but should be assisted by caregivers who are engaged in care; Because in any case, the so-called "environment" suitable for the elderly is the place where they live daily.
avoid bedridden, please don't eat while lying down; Avoid bedridden, please don't lie down to excrete, and even, you must avoid lying down to take a bath.
Over the past 28 years, I have been conveying these ideas to the professionals in charge of care, doctors, nurse practitioner, physiotherapists, etc. You don't have to go through medical treatment and rehabilitation to make your life better than it is now; If you want to live a better life, it depends on "the ability you have now." For the elderly, the years will only fade away day by day, and only "now" is most worth having.
I want to convey this concept transformation and methodology to people who care at home, so I published this book in 23. Besides being published in Japan, it was also published in South Korea, Taiwan Province, China and other places, and reached the best-selling list. After many years, it was finally revised and listed again.
in the revised content, the "Three Care" chapter is changed to a simpler and clearer "Q&; A "mode is compiled into a book, and the illustrations drawn by Miss Ayako Akita are also used. Thank you sincerely. In addition, this book is the second book in the series of "Home Care Support", which is similar to the previous book "Care for Dementia Q&: A (provisional translation, published by Toastmasters), completed in cooperation with Mr. Toda Mian, and thanked him for his assistance.
I hope that no one will be bedridden again, so that caregivers can catch their breath.
