Markang City is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. It is also the capital of the prefecture. In Tibetan, it means "a place of strong fire" and by extension means "a prosperous place". Malkang was established based on the four chieftain territories of Zhuokeji, Songgang, Dangba and Suomo among the original Jiarong 18 chieftains. It is also known as the "Four Lands Area". It is close to Girl Mountain and 365 kilometers away from the provincial capital Chengdu.
