Brief introduction of Altay region in northern Xinjiang

Altay region is located at the northern end of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at the southern foot of Altay Mountain, by the Irtysh River, and it is the gathering place of gorgeous tail feathers of China roosters. It borders Mongolia in the east, Kazakhstan and Russia in the northwest, and the border line is1205km long. Altay is inhabited by 36 ethnic groups including Kazak, Han, Hui, Uygur and Mongolian.

Whether it is lively horse racing, chasing sheep and girls, or exquisite embroidery, tapestries and fur products, tourists' eyes are full of mysterious exotic customs. The fragrant milk tea, steaming hand-grabbed meat and mellow koumiss wine make people feel the enthusiasm and heroism of ethnic minorities. Kanas-Harmony, located in the northernmost part of Altay, is the most dazzling pearl in this land. Kanas is Mongolian, which means beautiful, rich and mysterious.

It is famous for Kanas Lake and its surrounding snow-capped mountains, grasslands, birch forests and other beautiful scenery, and is known as the paradise of eastern Switzerland and photographers. Harmony-Kanas is a comprehensive scenic spot integrating glaciers, lakes, forests, grasslands, pastures, rivers, ethnic customs and rare animals and plants. Here, spectacular glaciers set off quiet lakes, and vast grasslands contain deep virgin forests.
