The Department of Health Sciences of Wuhan University (formerly Hubei Medical University) was founded in 1943, and it is the only provincial key institution of higher learning in Hubei Province that was founded before the founding of the People's Republic of China and has been growing continuously. The Department of Medicine originated from Hubei Provincial Medical College, which was established in 1943. It was renamed as Hubei Medical College (1953), Hubei Medical University (1993) and Wuhan University Medical College (2000).

The Medical Department includes Basic Medical College, First Clinical College, Second Clinical College, Stomatological College, Pharmacy College, Public Health College, Hope Nursing College, Vocational and Technical College and A3 Laboratory. People's Hospital of Wuhan University, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Stomatological Hospital of Wuhan University, and 1 1 non-directly affiliated hospitals. There are two key laboratories of the Ministry of Education: oral biomedical engineering, combinatorial biosynthesis and new drug creation. A3 laboratory is the first national recognized high-level biosafety laboratory, and has obtained the international AALAC laboratory animal management certification.
