The Jinsha River is located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. It runs through the deep mountains and narrow valleys on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan. The river surface is wide and the water is fast and the waves are strong. If the Red Army cannot cross the river, it will be pushed into the deep mountains and narrow valleys by the enemy, and the entire army will be in danger of being destroyed. When the Red Army brigade advanced towards the Jinsha River, Chiang Kai-shek suddenly realized as if waking up from a dream that the Red Army's goal was neither Guiyang nor Kunming, but that "it must undoubtedly cross the Jinsha River." On April 28, 1935, he issued an order to control the ferry, destroy the ship, and seal the river. Just before the Red Army arrived at the Jinsha River, the enemies on the riverside had plundered all the ships to the north bank.

On May 3, 1935, comrades from the Cadre Corps of the Military Commission accepted the task of seizing Kyaopingdu. Without saying a word, they traveled 180 miles day and night over mountains and ridges, and arrived at the Jinsha River that night. At the ferry, they luckily found a boat. It turned out that this ship was sending spies to the south bank to investigate the situation, but the spies disappeared without knowing where they were. Later, with the help of local farmers, they fished out a broken boat from the water and plugged the holes with cloth.

Then they quietly crossed to the north shore in these two boats. The enemy's sentry thought the spies were back and paid no attention. They launched a surprise attack, wiping out a company of regular troops and a security team in one fell swoop, and took control of both sides of the Jiaopingdu ferry. Later, they found five more boats and mobilized 36 sailors.

At the same time, the First Red Army Corps rushed to Longjie Ferry, and the Third Red Army Corps rushed to Hongmen Ferry. However, there were no ships at these two ferries, and the river was wide and the water was too tight to build a bridge. The Military Commission ordered them to quickly move to Jiaoping to cross the river.

From May 3rd to 9th, during 7 days and 7 nights, the main force of the Red Army relied on these 7 small boats to cross the river calmly. After crossing the Wujiang River in the south, the 9th Army Corps, which served as the rear guard, was ordered by the Military Commission to circle in western Guizhou, sometimes east and west, sometimes south and sometimes north, and contained part of the enemy's forces. On May 6, they arrived between Dongchuan and Qiaojia County in Yunnan, and successfully crossed the Jinsha River at Shujiedu on May 9. Two days later, the enemy's pursuers arrived at the south bank. But the Red Army had destroyed its ships, sealed off the rivers, and flown away without a trace.
