An analysis of all 23 studies to date on the relationship between ultra-processed foods and health, published in 2020, also concluded there was a link between junk food intake and rates of worsening high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels.

Junk food is food with almost no nutritional value. Defined as foods that contain large amounts of refined sugar, white flour, trans fats and saturated fats, additives such as salt, preservatives and colorants, and other foods that lack protein, vitamins, fiber and other nutritionally healthy ingredients. Also included are any foods that have been affected by hormones, additives, preservatives, unnatural genetic material, and chemical and thermal treatments that alter or destroy the natural state of healthy enzymes, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Junk food is mostly fortified with these harmful substances in order to extend the shelf life of the product so that manufacturers can maximize profits from original food sources such as soy and corn. These grains are processed by processing companies in countless ways into various forms for use as junk food.
