What I want to talk about today is the use of several common wood materials in building models.

The first type of joinery board: it has various colors, particles and thicknesses. The size of blockboard is about 100M× 10M, or it is sold in rolls with a thickness of 1 ~ 5L. The carpenter leveled the floor with a tightly laid wooden stick in the center and covered with plywood on both sides. Blockboard is a kind of board with split structure. The core of the board is made of short strips of wood, and two layers of plywood are glued on both sides. Blockboard has the advantages of durability, smooth surface, stable structure and difficult deformation. Usage: cut into blocks and strips first, so that you don't need to spend too much time and energy in the following processing. Wood materials, especially important column beams, should consider not only their firmness, but also their weight. Compared with blockboard or hollow plywood, veneer and hardboard have higher density and heavier weight.

The second kind of plywood: it is an artificial board made of three or more layers of veneer by planing or rotary cutting, gluing and hot pressing. The fiber directions between veneers are perpendicular to each other (or at a certain angle) and symmetrical, which overcomes the anisotropic defect of wood.

Usage: It is suitable for large-area plate parts, mainly used to make model chassis, and also used to make supporting materials on the surface and inside of furniture, ships, vehicles and other models. There are many kinds of plywood, such as ordinary plywood with a thickness below 12L. When making a model, you can choose to use it according to the design needs. The third kind of hardwood board: it is a board made of wood processing waste as raw material, processed into broken wood of a certain specification, shaved and hot-pressed with adhesive. Hardwood board has large format, smooth surface, good heat and sound insulation performance, consistent longitudinal and transverse strength, convenient processing, and the surface can be covered and decorated in various ways. Hardwood board is an ideal material for making panel furniture models. Because its cross section is fine and smooth, it is easy to cut and plane the flat one-way surface after the board is glued. However, the hardwood board is easy to expand and deform due to moisture, and the model made of it needs to be sealed with paint to prevent moisture. At present, there are still problems of heavy weight and poor nail holding power in hardwood boards.

The fourth kind of cork board is composed of particles mixed with synthetic resin adhesive. Cork is not closely combined with tissue, so it is soft, and its weight is only half that of hardwood (about 10.95K). Cork is easy to process, non-toxic, noise-free, and fast to make, and the model made with it has its unique texture. When the thickness of cork board is not enough, it can be laminated and glued to achieve the required thickness. During processing, a scalpel or paper cutter can be used to cut a single layer, and a desktop coordinate saw and a manual wire saw can be used to cut multiple or thicker layers.

Usage: When using cork board, we must pay attention to its structure. If the particles of cork board are too thick, it will hinder its use. Cork used in scientific and technological practice or cork used in medicine is especially suitable for modeling.

The fifth type of template: it is a plate made of low-density wood after chemical treatment. This kind of plate is delicate in texture and chemically treated, so as long as the tools are used properly in the production process, the incision will not crack whether it is cut along the wood grain or perpendicular to the wood grain. In addition, because the model making is now completed by laser engraving machine, its surface pattern is more exquisite, and it is also handy to cut into various special shapes. At present, the quality of templates imported from Canada is obviously better than that made in China. The advantages of this material are exquisite, crisp, clear texture, natural expression and convenient processing. Its disadvantages are strong hygroscopicity, easy deformation and difficulty in handling details.

Finally, there are other artificial decorative boards, and various decorative boards are constantly pushed to the market.
