Marathon is a long-distance walking race, with an official distance of 42. 195 km (26 miles and 385 yards). It is usually held as a road race. The race was named after the legendary long-distance running of the Greek soldier Phidippides, who was the messenger to Athens in the marathon. The historical accuracy of this legend is questionable, [1] especially contradicting Herodotus' statement.

Marathon is one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, although the distance did not become the standard until 192 1. There are more than 800 marathons every year in the world, and most of the participants are leisure athletes. There may be tens of thousands of people participating in the larger marathon.
