Does anyone know how to make a U-turn at a traffic light at an intersection?

At locations where U-turns are allowed, U-turns can only be made under a green light. Our country’s Road Safety Law also has relevant provisions on this.

U-turns are prohibited at "no left" intersections

Motor vehicles are not allowed to make a U-turn at locations where there are no U-turn or no left-turn signs or markings. Drivers should develop a good habit of looking at traffic lights, signs, and markings.

Some motorists believe that only a sign prohibiting left turns but no prohibiting U-turns at an intersection means U-turns are allowed. From the perspective of the impact on the traffic environment, left turns and U-turns must occupy the opposite lane. Therefore, unless there are special instructions at the intersection, as long as it is prohibited to turn left at an intersection, it also means that U-turns are prohibited.

U-turns are prohibited on crosswalks and other road sections

Vehicles are not allowed to turn around at railway crossings, crosswalks, bridges, sharp bends, steep slopes, tunnels or road sections prone to danger. The crosswalk mentioned here refers to the crosswalk zebra crossing on the road.

U-turns are prohibited when the center line is a solid yellow line

Except for intersections, if there are no signs or markings prohibiting U-turns on the road section, it means that U-turns are allowed. But it should be noted that if the road center line is a solid line, whether it is a single yellow line or a double yellow line, it means "no U-turns". Some roads are marked with "solid yellow dotted lines": one of the double yellow lines is a solid line and the other is a dotted line. It means that overtaking and U-turns are prohibited on the side of the solid line, while overtaking and U-turns are allowed on the side of the dotted line.

U-turns are allowed without prohibited signs

Vehicles may make a U-turn at locations where there are no prohibited U-turns or no left-turn signs or markings, but they must not impede the normal passage of other vehicles and pedestrians. Unless otherwise specified, you can make a U-turn at traffic lights in Beijing.

When a vehicle passes through an intersection and there is a sign saying "U-turns are allowed during red or green lights", the motor vehicle should follow the instructions of the sign and make a U-turn during the red or green lights. However, when making a U-turn, you must not obstruct the passage of other vehicles or pedestrians traveling normally.

Yellow grid lines allow U-turns

Many motorists stay away from yellow grid lines after knowing their function. A driver was once punished by the traffic police for parking on the yellow grid line. The driver took the case to court but was dismissed. The traffic control department specifically pointed out that at the yellow mesh line location, if there is no isolation guardrail in the middle of the road, it means that "U-turns are allowed."

Is it illegal for a vehicle to make a U-turn or turn left and run through a yellow light?

Not long ago, the Beijing Municipal Traffic Control Department carried out a special campaign on "running a yellow light" and clarified that "running a yellow light" "It is an illegal act. In fact, this is not a temporary legal measure. It is clearly stated in the second item of Article 38 of the "Implementation Regulations of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China": "When the yellow light is on, vehicles that have crossed the stop line can continue to pass." Therefore, the traffic control department reminds motorists that if the vehicle does not cross the stop line when the yellow light is on, it should wait within the stop line, otherwise it will be considered a violation of traffic regulations.

Running a yellow light is punished the same as running a red light, with 6 points deducted and a fine of 200 yuan.

Traffic Police Tips Precautions for U-turns or left turns:

The prerequisite for the Road Traffic Law to allow vehicles to make a U-turn or turn left is that they "must not obstruct the normal passage of other vehicles and pedestrians." According to the principle of right-of-way, a driver only needs to not obstruct the passage of vehicles going through. However, if you deliberately grab the lane and follow the vehicle in front without letting the vehicle going through, you are breaking the law.

At an intersection without a U-turn prohibition sign, you can make a U-turn if it is not prohibited to turn left; you cannot make a U-turn if it is prohibited to turn left. There is no red or green light here. By the way, U-turns are not allowed anywhere on the highway, including toll plazas, with or without signs.

Setting up a left-turn waiting area at an intersection is mainly to increase the vehicle storage capacity of the left-turn lane at the intersection, reduce the waiting time for drivers to pass the intersection, and improve the intersection capacity of motor vehicles. Vehicles that make a U-turn do not need to enter the waiting area. They can make a U-turn directly if safety is ensured.

It is clarified that intersections without "Prohibited" signs are regarded as "Permitted". When drivers need to make a U-turn, they do not need to look for intersections with "U-turn allowed" signs. However, if there is a clear sign at the intersection with prompts such as "Turn left when the green light is on" or "When the red light is on", you must make a U-turn according to the signal light instructions specified on the sign.

U-turns are prohibited at crosswalks in road sections. Although "No U-turns" signs are generally not set up at crosswalks in road sections separated by guardrails, for motorists, the crosswalks themselves are regarded as "prohibited signs." Anyone who makes a U-turn at a crosswalk will be treated as "U-turning at a place where U-turns are prohibited." This restriction does not apply to crosswalks at intersections.

As long as it is prohibited to turn left at an intersection, it also means that U-turns are prohibited. However, it should be noted that if the first lane on the left side of the intersection is a through lane, and if a U-turn is allowed, the traffic control department will draw a guide arrow with a straight lane in the guide lane. If there are no such guide arrows, signs prohibiting left turns or U-turns will generally be set up. The "U-turn allowed" signs will gradually fade out in the future. However, "U-turns allowed" signs will also be set up on the "dedicated motor vehicle U-turn lane" and at some special intersections. These "permitted" signs provide clear instructions to motorists in places that are prone to visual confusion, so as not to cause ambiguity and to facilitate motorists' recognition and compliance.

The following four behaviors will result in deducted points and fines

1. Vehicles with signs prohibiting U-turns (turning left) or turning around at markings;

2. A vehicle that makes a U-turn at a crosswalk;

3. A vehicle that causes a traffic accident with a normally moving vehicle or pedestrian when making a U-turn at a non-prohibited U-turn point;

4. Failure to turn from the left Vehicles making a U-turn in the first lane (except for places with dedicated U-turn lanes).
