Ba Jin’s information

Li Yaotang (1904~2005), pen name Ba Jin and courtesy name Fu Gan. Han nationality. His ancestral home is Jiaxing, Zhejiang. He was born on October 19, the 30th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (November 25, 1904) in Zhengtongshun Street, North Gate, Fucheng, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. A modern writer, translator and publisher, one of the most influential writers since the "May 4th" New Culture Movement, and a giant in contemporary Chinese literary circles. Died of illness in Shanghai on October 17, 2005.

The pen name "Ba Jin" comes from a classmate named Ba Enbo whom he met while studying in France, and "Peter", the author of the book Ba Jin was translating when the classmate committed suicide. "Alexevich Kropotkin". He took one word from each of the two people's names and became his pen names.

Ba Jin was born into a bureaucratic landlord family in Chengdu, Sichuan. My father once served as a county magistrate in Guangyuan County, Sichuan. He was an upright official. After the Revolution of 1911, he resigned and went into seclusion. His mother died in 1914. In 1917 his father also died. He studied at home with his teacher since he was a child. Acceptance of democratic and anarchist trends during the May 4th Movement. At the end of the lunar calendar in 1920, his grandfather passed away. Ba Jin was glad that "no one in the family could control" his actions. From 1920 to 1923, he studied English at Chengdu Foreign Languages ??School (one of the predecessors of Sichuan University), participated in the work of the progressive publication "Half Moon", participated in the organization of "Junshe", and carried out anti-feudal propaganda activities. In 1922, he published new poems such as "The Cry of the Abused" in "Jiji Xinbao Literary Tenth Period".

He went to Shanghai in 1923 and soon went to study at the High School Affiliated to Southeast University in Nanjing. After graduating in the summer of 1925, he often published papers and translations to promote anarchism. He went to France in 1927 and completed his first novella "Destruction" in Paris the following year. In 1929, it was published in "Novel Monthly" and caused a strong response. He returned to China in the winter of 1928 and lived in Shanghai. Within a few years, he wrote a lot. His major works include "Dead Sun", "Rebirth", "Sand", "Sprouting" and the famous "Torrent Trilogy" "Home", "Spring" and "Autumn", which was serialized in the "Times" in 1931. His novels "Love Trilogy", "Fog", "Rain" and "Electricity". Among them, "Home" is the author's masterpiece and one of the most outstanding works in the history of modern Chinese literature.

In 1934, he served as an editorial board member of "Literary Quarterly" in Beijing. In the autumn of the same year, he traveled east to Japan. Returning to China the following year, he served as the chief editor of Cultural Life Publishing House in Shanghai, publishing "Literature Series", "Cultural Life Series" and "Literature Series". In 1936, he and Jin Yi founded the "Wen Ji Monthly". In the same year, he and Lu Xun and others jointly published the "Declaration of Chinese Literary and Art Workers" and the "Declaration of Literary and Art Circles on Unity to Defend Insult and Freedom of Expression."

During the Anti-Japanese War, he moved to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guilin, and Chongqing. He served as the publisher and editor-in-chief of the weekly "Scream" (later renamed "Fenghuo"), and served as a director of the All-China Association of Literary and Art Circles to Resist the Enemy. The short stories are famous for "God" and "Ghost". After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he mainly engaged in translation, editing and publishing. Ba Jin's novel creation occupies an extremely important position in the history of modern novels in my country. He also has many translations. After liberation, he wrote many beautiful prose, expressing his love for the motherland and his love for life.

In 1949, he attended the first National Congress of Literary and Art Circles and was elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
