After more than ten years' efforts, karakoram highway 1979 was officially declared completed, and 1986 was officially opened to the outside world in May. The whole highway has 24 main bridges, 70 small bridges and 1700 culverts. 8,000 tons of explosives, 80,000 tons of cement and 30 million cubic meters of earthwork were used in the construction. The southernmost tip of the road built by China is Tacot Bridge, which was renamed "Friendship Bridge" in August 2004. Karakoram highway is known as a miracle in the history of highway construction. In order to build this road, 88 engineers and workers sent by China died, so Pakistan built a fierce soil cemetery for these 88 China martyrs and a cemetery guarded by Pakistani soldiers with live ammunition.
