Wild fruits in memory

Western Guangdong is the poorest and backward area in Guangdong. There are many barren mountains and ridges, transportation is extremely inconvenient, and the economy is backward. In the memories of our generation, the most unforgettable thing in childhood is poverty. We, children from rural areas, all have similar family backgrounds. Our father goes out to work and our mother farms at home. We have followed our mother in farm work since we were young. Unlike the children in the city who have all kinds of snacks, our pockets are empty all year round, and a dime snack is also a luxury for us. So in my memory, most of the snacks I ate as a child were wild fruits, gifts from nature.

Our village is surrounded by mountains, and there are many kinds of wild fruits. Some of them are recognizable by name, and some of them are unknown. Passing on the experience of the older generation, we have known which wild fruits are edible and which ones since we were young. is poisonous. So, every time when the wild fruits are ripe, we go to the mountains in groups to pick wild fruits to satisfy our hunger.

Shanminzi

Shanminzi should be the most common wild fruit in western Guangdong. It is also the most familiar and satisfying wild fruit in our childhood memories. Children who grew up in rural areas should all I have eaten it, but many people don’t know its scientific name.

Before and after the Qingming Festival, the mountain thorns bloom, and the mountains and fields are covered with pink flowers, which is very spectacular.

The ripening period of mountain berries is usually June or July, which is during the summer vacation, so we children often go up the mountain to pick mountain berries. The immature yam fruit is green, turns red when it is about to mature, and finally changes from red to purple, and then from purple to black. The red hawthorn seeds are ready to eat, but they are not as sweet. The perfectly ripe hawthorn fruit is shaped like a small earthen pot with five small ears on the top. It tastes sweet from the mouth to the heart.

But don’t eat too much squid, otherwise you will be prone to constipation.

"Supplements to the Compendium of Materia Medica" describes the "Shanchuanzi": "It is as big as a peach, and its color is more fragrant. The middle stem is pure purple, with yellow whiskers sprouting from the heart, spreading outside the flower, just like gold threads." In our minds, sedge is just a wild fruit that satisfies our cravings. But in fact, it has both high nutritional value and medicinal value. In my hometown, some people also dry shank fruits and use them to make wine, but I have never drunk this kind of wine.

Since my family moved to town, I haven’t seen Shamrock for many years.

Mountain Syzygium

One year when I passed by Ningyin Lake at South China Agricultural University, I saw a lot of fallen fruits on the ground. I thought they looked familiar. I picked them up and saw that they were Syzygium common in my hometown. Unexpectedly, many years later, I would be able to see Syzygium sylvestris again on Huanong’s campus. I took a look at the sign hanging on the tree: "Symze apple, an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia." When we were kids, we called it Syzygium sylvestris, and we actually got its scientific name right.

There are two very tall Syzygium trees in our village. When Syzygium ripens, the fruit is yellow. Its seeds are the same as walnuts. They are larger, the flesh is thinner, and they don’t taste very sweet. , the taste is average, so we rarely eat mountain sycamore, and only consider it when we are really hungry. Most of the time, we play with sweet apples.

I didn’t expect that Syzygium would become a green tree in the city. Think about it, if the two Syzygium trees in our village still survive today, wouldn’t they be very valuable?

Guava

Guava is a very common subtropical fruit, available in most supermarkets.

I went to the supermarket some time ago and bought two guavas. They were large in size, but they tasted very ordinary and not as delicious as the guava from my hometown.

When I was a child, I also planted a guava tree in front of my house. It was dug by my mother from the wild. There is a big difference between wild guava and artificially cultivated guava. Generally, artificially cultivated guava saplings are purchased. The grown guava fruit is larger in size, two or three times the size of wild guava, and tastes better, so generally Very few people grow wild guavas. The wild guava tree in front of my house was originally used to provide shade and wind protection, but later it blossomed and became a source of snacks for our children.

Whenever the guava matures, we go to the guava tree every day and pinch the guava fruits with our nails to see which ones are about to mature. Before the guava was fully ripe, we eagerly picked it and ate it. There were no snacks at that time. We children were often so hungry that we ate up all our own guava and stole other people’s. When we had no other options, we went to the wild to look for wild guava. There are many wild guava in our village, although the fruit of wild guava is very small and not as delicious as the ones grown at home. But for us, wild guava is also a rare snack.

When I went back to my hometown two years ago, I saw that the guava tree in front of my hometown is still there, but the economy has improved and children nowadays don’t like to eat wild guava very much.

There are some unknown wild fruits in my hometown, and no information about them can be found on Baidu. Therefore, they can only exist in our childhood memories.
