Do you have any recommendations for some good Japanese whiskey?

Some moments in our lives deserve special treatment, and Japanese whiskey is the perfect choice for those special moments.

Whether we are gathering with friends, spending time alone, or celebrating big or small events, Japanese whiskey can be our loyal companion.

Today, I would like to recommend three entry-level Japanese whiskeys to you. These recommendations are all based on my real experience. I hope you will like them as much as I do.

Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey (Yamazaki Single Malt)

Let’s talk about Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey first. This whiskey was one of the first I tried and it holds a special place in my heart.

Yamazaki is one of the oldest whiskey distilleries in Japan. It was founded in 1923 and is located at the foot of Kyoto. When you open this bottle, you will smell the light aroma of yuzu, orange and vanilla, as if you were transported into a Japanese citrus grove.

The first time I tasted Yamazaki whiskey was on a cold winter night. I was sitting in front of the fireplace, and the fire gradually warmed the house. The wine showed amazing softness and balance in my mouth, with a hint of oatmeal and hints of oak.

On my tongue, it has both a hint of sweetness and a slight earthiness. Every bite was like a warm hug and made me feel welcome.

Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey is a great choice to start with as the flavor is not overly complex without losing depth. Whether you're a newbie or a veteran, you'll be attracted by its balance and gentleness.

Miyagikyo Whiskey (Miyagikyo)

Next, let’s turn to Miyagikyo Whiskey. This whiskey comes from Miyagi Prefecture, located in northeastern Japan. Miyagi whiskey is usually characterized by its soft and fruity flavor and was a pleasant discovery for me at a Japanese bar.

Once, I sat down in a small bar in Tokyo and the waiter recommended Miyagi whiskey. I ordered a glass, and the first sip felt like tasting a piece of ripe fruit, with pear and apple flavors filling my mouth. This fresh, fruity aroma paired with a subtle smokiness has me hooked.

Miyagi whiskey has a distinctive lightness that makes you enjoy it cup after cup. It's perfect for sitting outside on the terrace on a summer evening and enjoying the breeze.

This is a whiskey that is very easy to like. Even if you are not a whiskey lover, you will be impressed by its flavor.

Nikka From the Barrel

Finally, I would like to introduce to you a more challenging Japanese whiskey, that is Nikka From the Barrel. This whiskey is the work of Nikka distillery, which was created by Japanese master distiller Shigeo Takeidomi.

Deer Park whiskey is characterized by high alcohol content, usually more than 50%, so drink with caution. The first time I tried this whiskey was at a whiskey tasting event and I was blown away by its complexity and power.

This whiskey has an intense aroma, with spicy and peppery notes, but also nutty and oaky depth.

The moment you drink it, there will be a fire-like feeling in your mouth, but as time goes by, you will discover the layers and balance. This is a challenging whiskey, but also an adventure full of surprises.

Beibei has something to say:

The world of Japanese whiskey is so vast and full of different flavors and experiences. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned connoisseur, you'll find something you like among these whiskeys.

The warmth and balance of Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskey, the fresh fruitiness of Miyagi Whiskey, and the complexity and power of Deer Park Whiskey are all irresistible.

Whether you’re at home in front of the fireplace or out on a Tokyo terrace at night, these whiskeys are sure to accompany your time. I hope you will explore and enjoy this wonderful Japanese whiskey tour as much as I did.

No matter which one you choose, I hope you can taste the uniqueness and feel the charm of Japanese brewing culture. cheers!
