Backed by the vast economic hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta, it is the main maritime gateway to the world along the eastern coast of China and the Yangtze River basin. The city consists of 1390 islands. Known as the "City of Thousand Islands". The main islands are Zhoushan Island, Daishan Island, Zhujiajian Island Island, Liuheng Island and Jintang Island, of which Zhoushan Island is the largest with an area of 502.65 square kilometers, making it the fourth largest island in China.

Zhoushan is the largest seafood production, processing and sales base in China, and is known as Zhoushan Fishing Ground, Donghai Fish Warehouse and China Fishing Capital.
