Lancia Monte Carlo (Monte Carlo)

The brakes are easy to lock and cause accidents.

Monte Carlo is a mid-mounted rear-drive sports car introduced by Lancia Company in 1975. * * * There are two body forms: two-door hardtop and two-door hardtop convertible. During 1976-1977, Monte Carlo with two hardtop and convertible doors was sold in the American market, but the name was changed to "Scorpion" because the name of Monte Carlo had been used by Chevrolet to name one of its cars before the car entered the American market.

In terms of appearance, Monte Carlo takes a tough route, and the overall lines of the car body are straight and powerful. Among them, my personal favorite is its front design. From the front side, we can see that the top is obviously much longer than the bottom. This design creates a strong visual impact, which can be seen on BMW 3 Series or Ford Mustang.

In terms of power, Lancia Montecarlo*** has two gasoline engines to choose from, namely, an inline four-cylinder engine with displacement of 1.8L and 2.0L, with maximum power of 8 1 horsepower and 120 horsepower, respectively. Among them, the 1.8L engine is only installed in the Scorpion model in the American market. In terms of gearbox, Lancia only prepared a 5-speed manual gearbox for Monte Carlo.

A brief understanding of Monte Carlo, and then look at its quality problems, which have to start with its braking system. Because the engine of Monte Carlo is not at the front, the weight on the front axle is very small, and the grip of the two front wheels is far less than that of the two rear wheels. This seems all right. Aren't many sports cars the same? However, Lancia added a brake vacuum booster to the front wheel of Monte Carlo, which made the braking force of the front wheel much larger than that of the rear wheel. Such a large braking force acts on the front wheel with insufficient grip. In this way, the front wheel will be easily locked when braking (there is no ABS in Monte Carlo), resulting in steering failure and traffic accidents.

Lancia Company realized the danger caused by brake design defects and decided to suspend the production of 1978 Monte Carlo model until the problem was effectively solved. After a long wait of two years, Lancia finally put forward the so-called "effective" solution, and the production of Monte Carlo model resumed at 1980. So in two years, what changes did Lancia make to the braking system of Monte Carlo? The answer is puzzling, that is, directly remove the brake vacuum booster installed on the front wheel. Let's not discuss whether it took a long time to make such a change for the time being. Most importantly, the driver needs to spend more effort to step on the brake pedal when braking the modified brake system. Although the problem of brake locking has been solved, the braking effect has become worse than before because of the low braking force. Using ultra-thin steel plate, strong wind will deform and rust easily.

Beta is the car series launched by Lancia Company on 1972, and it is the first car series launched by Lancia Company after it was taken over by Fiat Company. Beta*** has four body types: four-door sedan, two-door coupe, two-door convertible and three-door travel model. Beta adopts the chassis layout of front drive, front and rear independent suspension and four-wheel disc brake. It can be seen that Beta is a car that pays more attention to the driving experience.

Although the Beta version has many fuselage shapes, the overall design style is the same, which belongs to the tough style. The body lines are straight and stiff. Although the body shape of the square head and brain looks a bit dull, it can also be understood that this car looks very man from another angle.

In the power part, Lancia has prepared several inline four-cylinder gasoline engines for the Beta model, from the minimum displacement of 1.3L, 1.4L, 1.75L to 2.0L * *, 1982. The maximum power of these engines in the test version varies slightly according to the age of the vehicle, ranging from the minimum of 8 1 horsepower to the maximum of 133 horsepower. Compared with the rich engine selection, Beta is very single in gearbox, with only a 5-speed manual gearbox.

As a car series focusing on excellent driving experience, Lancia Beta did not live up to the company's expectations at first, and its sales performance in the automobile market was outstanding that year. However, it is precisely because of the good sales performance in the market that the shortcomings of this car are infinitely magnified, which eventually leads to an unprecedented public relations crisis for Lanqiya Company and a huge loss of its reputation.

The problem with Beta is the steel plate on the car body. According to the data, the thickness of steel plates on the bodies of all Beta models is unprecedentedly thin in Dou Shi, and even stronger wind can blow the bodies out of shape. Although this is an exaggeration, the host on the Top Gear program also used the same statement to laugh at Beta when commenting on this car.

In addition to the thin body steel plate, another problem of Beta is that it is easy to rust, especially the Beta four-door sedan version produced between 1972 and 1975 is the most serious. The most exaggerated statement about Beta rust is that it will rust as long as it rains. There are many versions of the reasons for this problem, such as the quality problems of steel itself and the defects of production technology, but the most convincing one is that the anti-rust treatment is not enough.

The problem of β rust will occur in every position on the car body, among which the rust at the joint of the front subframe is the most influential, because the rust at this position will lead to the looseness of the joint of the front subframe, which will not only cause abnormal noise when driving, but also have serious safety hazards. The most embarrassing thing is that these rusty and loose vehicles can't pass the annual inspection of vehicles. Imagine if you bought such a car and didn't dare to drive it out in the wind and rain? This is Lancia's luxury car. In 1976- 1984, it was the flagship model in Lancia product line. Pininfarina is responsible for the styling design of the car, and provides Berlina four-door sedan and coupe versions. The Berlin version produced 65,438+05,272 cars and the coupe produced 6789 cars.

Engineers designed a new engine for Gamma, called Lancia flat-4 engine, which is a very rare horizontally opposed engine. Only Subaru and Porsche are keen on this unique structure. At that time, this Lancia horizontal 4-cylinder engine was available in 2.0-liter and 2.0-liter versions. 5 L model, and the maximum power is only 89 kW and 104 kW, which is a bit insufficient for a luxury car. However, at that time, Italian regulations imposed additional taxes on cars above 2.0 L, so the 2.0 L gamma was still competitive.

Ironically, the Lancia flat-4 engine is notorious. Very easy to overheat, leading to cylinder pulling or even cylinder bursting. But its steering is controlled by a belt. When the tire is locked in the extreme position, it is easy to break the belt. Driving Gamma on the track is faster than a death race. This is the allusion to the famous joke "When the steering wheel turns, the car dies".

In fact, all Lancia cars have some minor problems, which are definitely not perfect, so Lancia cars always show amazing sports performance and offer very attractive prices.
