Balance Buddhism and Taoism: Why is the Jade Emperor a mature and sophisticated politician?
Why do people hold grudges? Why can't we live in peace? In the final analysis, it is because of the asymmetry of desire and resources. People's desires are endless, and the resources to satisfy them are always limited. No matter how productive forces develop and society progresses, this will never change. Everyone in the Wulin wants to learn peerless martial arts and dominate the Jianghu, but there is only one sunflower collection, and there is only one position as the leader of the Wulin. It is this fundamental reason that led to the bloodshed in the rivers and lakes.
Take our real life as an example. When a person first came to Beishangguang, he was a stranger and had nothing. At this time, you may think that if you can have a place to live here, even a one-bedroom house is very satisfied. However, when you have a one-bedroom apartment, get married and have children, the house will not be enough. At this time, the satisfaction of buying a house will soon disappear. What you want is a big house with two or three rooms. What you want is a school district room. What you want is to give your children a good kindergarten and primary school. What you want is that your children will enter a higher social class in the future. Next, you want them to find a good family to get married and have children as soon as possible? One new desire after another keeps appearing, and if you go on like this, you will even feel that you are not yourself. People should never think that they have seen themselves clearly and understood themselves. People's understanding of themselves is always changing, except that "desire is endless"
As far as desire is concerned, the fairy monsters in The Journey to the West are exactly the same as the mortals in our reality. Take the Monkey King as an example. He is a natural stone monkey. After becoming the Monkey King, he wanted to escape the pain of reincarnation and become a fairy. Learn to be an avatar, become an immortal, and then rebel. After being recruited, he became Marvin Bi, but he was not satisfied and wanted to be the Monkey King. After becoming the Great Sage of the Monkey, he was not satisfied. Instead, he stole the flat peach elixir, made a scene in Heaven, and became an emperor.
Therefore, mortals can never leave politics, and fairies and monsters in the Westward Journey world must also talk about politics. Immortality can't solve all problems. So, what is politics? The founding father said: politics is the management of all people. This definition is simple and broad. It tells you what politics is, but doesn't explain how to do it. Politics is essentially a struggle and compromise between different groups and factions. A good political ecology means that different factions can maintain a dynamic balance. Great politicians have the responsibility to ensure that this balance will not be broken and there will be no monopoly. It is the dominant position of Taoism that makes the old gentleman in Tai Shang have the courage to manipulate the Monkey King to make havoc in Heaven and seize the position of the Jade Emperor.
From heaven to earth, Taoism is in an advantageous position. The nine-turn elixir (equivalent to a flat peach) used by the Jade Emperor to open the Dan Yuan Congress was provided by the old gentleman in Taishang. The old man has something to say to the jade emperor, who will come out to meet him in person. The fifth time in the book, when Guanyin Bodhisattva recommended Erlang God to the Jade Emperor to capture the Monkey King, there was such a detailed description:
The Bodhisattva said, "I want to see the Jade Emperor." . "I'm tired of playing." Shi Tian Qiu Hongji immediately entered Lingxiao Hall, where he was inspired and announced. Sometimes the old gentleman is at the top and the heavenly queen is at the back.
I noticed that the queen mother was in charge of the flat peach garden, and the old gentleman could refine the nine-turn elixir. Flat peaches and elixirs are also precious resources that can make people live forever, while the queen mother is behind the jade emperor, but the old gentleman is above the jade emperor. It can be seen that the position of the old gentleman in heaven is unique, and even the Jade Emperor gave him three points of courtesy.
Jinding daxian
According to the book, at the foot of Lingshan, there is a YuZhen view, in which a Jin Xian lives. Lingshan is the residence of the Tathagata, but there is a Taoist temple right under his nose, where a Taoist fairy lives. Will it surprise everyone? Jinding Daxian only appeared twice in the book, the first time was in the eighth time, and the second time was in the ninety-eighth time. Although he doesn't have many plays and is insignificant in the whole story of westward journey, the author has arranged such a character, but he has revealed a lot of information to us.
Who is Jinding Daxian? Why did Tathagata allow him to live in Lingshanjiao Mountain? In today's words, he is the director of Lingshan Heaven Office. On behalf of the Jade Emperor, he is responsible for being the eyes and ears of the Jade Emperor and supervising Buddhism. Without the jade emperor's will, he wouldn't dare to live at the foot of Lingshan if he gave Jinding Daxian a hundred courage.
In the ninety-eighth time, the four monks of the Tang Dynasty finally arrived at Lingshan. The first person to meet them was not a Buddhist disciple, but a Taoist daxian in Jinding.
I saw a Taoist boy standing in front of the mountain and shouting, "Isn't that the man who came from the East to learn the scriptures?" The elder quickly adjusted his clothes and looked up to watch. See him: dressed in brocade, hand-cranked bluebird. Dressed in brocade, Bao Ge Yaochi often goes to banquets; Hand-cranked bluebird, a surname blows dust every time. Elbow hanging fairy? Step on your shoes. It's really a feather. It's really beautiful. If you practice, you will live forever and get rid of dust. The holy monk didn't know that there was a visitor from Lingshan, and Jinding Daxian came. Sun recognized it and called, "Master, this is the jade girl at the foot of Lingshan. He has come to pick us up. "
Jade? M (studying as a teacher) Is blowing dust and shaking jade in the hands of Taoist priests? M, a scholar with floating feathers, lives in Yuzhenguan, which shows that he is a Taoist. And his "Bao Ge Chi Yao often goes to banquets" shows that he often goes to heaven, that is, God reports his work to the Jade Emperor.
The four of them spent the night in Zhensi, and the next day they will visit Tathagata in Lingshan.
Just say goodbye to Sanzang. "Stay here until I send you away," said the fairy. "You don't have to see me off," Monkey said. "I know the way." "You know the cloud," said the big fairy. The holy monk hasn't climbed the cloud road yet, so he should go this way. " With a smile on his face, Daxian took the Tang Priest by the hand and led him to the altar to practice the Dharma. It turned out that this road couldn't get out of the gate, so I went through the back door from Guan Yu's middle hall.
If you want to worship the Tathagata, you must first say hello to the immortals in heaven. You are not allowed to go on Lingshan, you must go. On the way to Lingshan, there is no real jade viewing, just going through the back door. What does this mean? It shows that the earthquake landscape is built in the middle of the road leading to Lingshan. Everyone who goes up and down the mountain must pass through the earthquake view, that is to say, everyone who sees the newcomer knows the Jinding Daxian.
In the eighth time in the book, five hundred years after the Monkey King made a scene in the Heavenly Palace, the Tathagata made a plan to spread scriptures in the east, and Guanyin Bodhisattva accepted the task of searching scriptures in the east and went down to Lingshan.
When the Bodhisattva reached the foot of the mountain, there was a big fairy at the top of the gate. She asked the Bodhisattva to offer tea. The Bodhisattva didn't dare to stop for a long time, saying, "Now take the Tathagata's imperial edict and go to the eastern soil to find a monk." "When will the monk arrive?" The big fairy asked. The Bodhisattva said, "I don't know." . "Maybe in two or three years, we can stop here."
Yu Zhen was at the foot of Lingshan, Guanyin went down the mountain, and Jinding Daxian caught it at the door and asked the Bodhisattva to offer tea. Did he just ask the bodhisattva for tea? Of course not. Immortals who go in and out of Lingshan must go through the concept of jade truth and master the important movements of Lingshan. It is the obligation of Jinding Daxian and Buddha to report the major actions of Lingshan.
Therefore, "Jinding Daxian catches Bodhisattva at the door". He actually stopped the Bodhisattva and fulfilled his duty. He asked what Guanyin said to Tathagata when he was playing in Lingshan, and then it seemed that it was reported by the Jade Emperor. Bodhisattva is also very knowledgeable. When he met Jinding Daxian, he directly reported his work and said, "I'm going to the East to find a monk." Crossing the eastern soil is an extremely important plan for Buddhism. As soon as the Tathagata was formulated, Guanyin told Jinding Daxian what happened. If Jinding was an ordinary Taoist immortal, would Guanyin still tell him? Of course not. Just because Jinding has the title of "Director of Lingshan Tianfu".
Guanyin Bodhisattva coaxed Jinding Daxian.
Here's a detail that needs attention: before learning the scriptures, the Jinding Daxian asked Guanyin Bodhisattva, "When will the Buddhist scriptures arrive?" Guanyin said, "I haven't decided yet, maybe in two or three years, or I will be here." In fact, it took more than ten years to learn from the scriptures. In the ninety-eighth session, when Daxian met the Tang Priest in Zhenjinding Temple, he said:
"The holy monk just arrived this year, and I was coaxed by Guanyin Bodhisattva. Ten years ago, he took the Buddha's golden edict and went to the East to find someone to learn from. He said he would come to my place in 2003. I waited year after year, but there was no news. I didn't expect to meet again this year. "
Is this just a joke played by Jinding Daxian unintentionally? Of course not. Jinding Daxian waited year after year just to report his work to the Jade Emperor. Originally, he said two or three years, but he didn't want to spend fourteen years. When the Tang Priest learned the scriptures, Guanyin told the Tathagata that the Tang Priest had learned the scriptures for fourteen years, which was 5,040 days. Buddhists pay attention to the number of collections in everything. One episode is 5048, and the time for Tang Priest to learn Buddhist scriptures is 5040 days, not the number of episodes. Therefore, King Kong is required to send the Tang Priest back to the Eastern Tang Dynasty within eight days, and let him go back to the Western Heaven to collect Tibetan scriptures. What does this mean? The time arranged by Tathagata and Guanyin to learn Buddhist scriptures is not "two or three years" at all! Why did Guanyin trick Jinding Daxian into telling him the truth?
Before the tiangong chaos, the jade emperor trusted Taoism, so he sent the Taoist Jinding Daxian to Lingshan to supervise Tathagata. Tathagata is a Buddhist monk and one of the five elders in the five realms. It is extremely important to supervise his work. The jade emperor chose the Taoist Jinding Daxian as the post of "Director of Lingshan Tianfu", which shows the dependence and trust of the jade emperor on Taoism and the influence of Taoism in the whole heaven.
However, the situation changed after the havoc in heaven. There is no one in Taoism worthy of the jade emperor's trust. He is not sure whether Jinding Daxian has been bought by the old gentleman. However, Jinding Daxian was originally the director of Lingshan Heaven Office, and it is not easy to be replaced rashly. After the havoc in the Heavenly Palace, supporting Buddhism, confronting Taoism and maintaining the balance of political factions are the top priority of the Jade Emperor. The Buddha's plan to spread the scriptures to the east is also a natural trend, which not only meets the needs of the jade emperor, but also strengthens his own strength.
What a shrewd person Guanyin Bodhisattva is. She has a clear understanding of the official situation at this time. She has the responsibility to tell Jinding Daxian about her plan to learn from the scriptures. However, the plan to learn from the scriptures is bound to be supported by the Jade Emperor and will be obstructed and opposed by Taoists. How to implement the plan, what route to take, what time limit, these specific details, Buddhism and the Jade Emperor must carefully consider, in order to achieve the goals of both sides. Nine times out of ten he is a Taoist. How could Guanyin tell Jinding these details? So I said, "undetermined, about two or three years." After all, I have told you that I have done my duty to spread the scriptures to the east and find someone to learn from them. But I won't tell you the details. If you want to oppose obstruction, you have to spend more time. Afterwards, it was proved that it took a lot of trouble for Taoists to find out the plan of learning from the scriptures and implement the countermeasures of obstruction.
This Guanyin Bodhisattva is really an old hand in officialdom. He does things properly and never misses a word. No wonder, when Guanyin volunteered to go to the East to seek Buddhist scriptures, Tathagata was "overjoyed" and said, "No one else can go. You must be a Guanyin venerable and have great magic to get it. " For Tathagata, her "magical power" not only shows her strength, but also Guanyin's "political ability" reassures Tathagata.
