What is the irony of Fengxia’s death?

At the beginning of the film, the camera goes straight into the dirty casino. The protagonist of the story, Fugui, was happily spinning the dice with the appearance of a decadent prodigal, just like many dandy boys at that time.

Soon, the beginning of the story appeared. Due to long-term debt, Fugui lost all his remaining money to Long Er, a shadow puppet performer. When others came to collect debts, the white-haired father signed Fugui's contract and died. Prior to this, his pregnant wife Jia Zhen could not bear the decadence and left home with her daughter Xia Feng. It seems that fate will hand over all misfortunes to Fugui in an instant.

However, fate always likes to be laughed at. A year later, Jia Zhen returned to Fugui with her newborn son Youqing. Fu Gui also changed his mind and borrowed money from Long Er who occupied his house. Second, knowing the hardship of life, Long borrowed a box of shadow puppets from Fugui to make money to support his family. So Fugui started a shadow puppet show business with Chunsheng from the same village.

Maybe Fugui was lucky, maybe with the thought of living in his heart, he finally walked out of death alive! When he carried his shadow box home, the eagerness and happiness reflected on his face made his thin, chiseled face look particularly rosy, happy and strong under the reflection of the setting sun. It really makes people feel: It’s so good to be alive!

Fugui returned home full of hope, only to find that his daughter Fengxia had become mute due to fever and could only smile at him. That innocent and peaceful smile was in sharp contrast to that dark era, but it was hard-won. His old mother also passed away, and the burden of the family was borne by Jia Zhen. He worked from dawn to dusk, boiling and delivering water to make ends meet. Fugui's return finally completes the family.

The family continues to live a poor but happy life. But fate once again brought disaster to the family. Youqing, who was originally lively and active, was accidentally killed by Chunsheng, who became the district chief. The family was heartbroken and Jia Zhen could not forgive Chun Sheng. Fengxia met Erxi, a loyal and honest man, and they got married.

This should be the most festive and joyful scene in the whole film. However, fate is so unpredictable. Unfortunately, Fugui's family is always favored by misfortune. In a blink of an eye, when Fengxia gave birth, only young students were left in the hospital, and the doctors were criticized and locked up. Amid the worries of the family, the child was born, but the mother suffered from postpartum hemorrhage.

Because young students cannot be cured and die! At that time, Fu Gui could not save his daughter. Because of his own mistakes, the gynecology professor who was finally invited was still in doubt about his life or death when Fengxia suffered from severe bleeding.

The ending of the story is not abrupt, but it contains the myth of survival. This devastated family seems to be unable to endure the torture of life any longer.
