This book was ruined by the title, and the adapted English drama scored 9.4 in Douban.

If it wasn't recommended by my friends, I wouldn't want to open this book named "The Diary of Doctor's Resignation with Absolute Laughter", because just looking at this grandiose cover and title, I feel "so messy". But when I finished reading it, I found that I had completely misunderstood it before, because it is really a very readable book, a book that makes you "absolutely laugh" and a book that makes you think after laughing.

In 2022, the BBC adapted part of this book into eight episodes of English drama, entitled "This is going to hurt". After the release, the response was good, which made this book ruined by the title enter the eyes of many readers.

Adam kay, the author of Never Laugh and Spray Doctor's Diary, is an obstetrician and gynecologist in the National Health Service (NHS). When the book was published, it was obvious that he had quit his job as a doctor.

The book contains the diary of the author during his work in NHS, and records all kinds of wonderful patients, daily farce, endless overtime and mountains of pressure he encountered in his work experience from intern to resident, to attending doctor and finally to deputy chief doctor.

Adam kay can be said to have developed his intensive spit skills to the extreme. Not only do you speak bluntly and hit the nail on the head, but also the stalks that make people laugh are endless. Those funny and vivid metaphors made me so happy that I couldn't help but sigh: "Do British people speak with such a sense of humor?"

I'll just list a few fragments that impressed me in the book:

In fact, in my opinion, doctors are just a profession, but it is precisely because this profession is related to life and death, and it is different from most other professions, which makes doctors look mysterious and noble to outsiders. However, people often forget that doctors are ordinary people, and people are only good at imagining the hard-working image of doctors as "angels in white". However, when people really want to imagine all the complicated, trivial and mechanically repetitive daily life that doctors have to face and deal with every day, their imagination is pitiful.

Adam kay's confession in his diary presents us with an unexpected and detailed doctor's daily tragicomedy, which is very funny and unpretentious, but it makes you sad to the heart: you are almost completely deprived of your spare time, and you are already overwhelmed, but you can't ignore the patient's safety anyway; Caring for patients and improving the lives of others brings happiness and satisfaction, but death often comes unexpectedly, and despair and pain go hand in hand. So they got stuck, much like being brainwashed by intravenous injection.

I also watched the drama "Pain is Inevitable", and I want to talk about the feelings of watching the drama here. Compared with the original work, the adaptation of the play can be regarded as an excellent second creation. It is not adapted into a unit drama in the form of the original diary, but the main line is complete and the plot is close.

As soon as the first episode came up, it directly brought the audience into the play: a woman about to give birth, a baby with an umbilical cord around her neck, and a trapped "elevator" (actually an elevator). On the one hand, it is full of tension, on the other hand, it seems funny, as if to say that all this seems to be drama, but everything is really the daily life of obstetrics and gynecology. When our protagonist Adam stepped into the hospital, the drama of the day began.

But unlike the original, the drama, like its original English name, always makes you feel hurt. It is very depressed, and this repression runs through, and finally failed to usher in the outbreak of carefree people. That is to say, when the audience once thought that the doctor in the play would eventually overcome difficulties, surpass himself and carry out the doctor's sacred mission, what they saw was trampled by an invisible hand again and again, almost losing the will to survive, leaving only a little fun in bitterness to resist the gloom and sadness day after day. And they tell you that this is the reality, and the reality will not be as you wish. If you use one word to describe it, it is: mourning.

Just as the first episode of the ending song "The State We Are in" started, the seemingly real and unreal electronic music floated in the intoxicated scene of indulging in pleasure, but our hero Adam left us with a trembling back and a scene of slowly lying down in a dreamy trance and finally closing his eyelids wearily.

This scene sets the tone of the whole drama: the decline under the shell of comedy and a deep sense of powerlessness. Happy and heartbroken.

I like this work very much. I recommend you to have a look. It will satisfy your curiosity about the "white coat", which will probably make you depressed, but it will also bring you a lot of thinking. However, it is very important that it really makes you laugh. When you open it, it will be hard for you to miss this book again.
