A Thousand Years of Sleep - The Story of Venerable Anuruddha’s Achievement of the Heavenly Eye

Venerable Anuruddha is one of the ten disciples of the Buddha and also the cousin of the Buddha. After the Buddha became enlightened, he returned to his hometown to spread Buddhism. Anuruddha, along with seven princes including Bhati and Ananda, followed the Buddha to become a monk and learn Taoism.

One day, when the Buddha was giving a sermon, he saw Anuruddha dozing off, and scolded him with a verse: You sleep so well, inside a snail and clam shell, you can sleep for a thousand years without hearing it. Buddha's name.

The Buddha then asked: Anuruddha, did you become a monk and learn Taoism because you were afraid of the king's law and thieves?

No, it is to relieve the suffering of birth, old age, illness and death.

Although you have a strong Taoist heart, why did you fall asleep while listening to the Dharma?

World Honored One, please forgive me for your laziness! From now on, I am willing to live my life and work hard! Venerable Analysus felt very ashamed and felt great repentance.

From then on, Analudu developed a brave heart and practiced diligently, never sleeping a wink all day long. The Buddha was very concerned about this, so he comforted him: All living beings depend on food for living, and the eyes depend on sleep for food. Even Arahants also need to eat!

World Honored One: The disciple’s eyes don’t matter. But what does nirvana feed on?

Don’t let it go! But before reaching a very deep state, you still need an appropriate amount of sleep.

However, Analudu still insisted on his determination and continued to practice bravely and diligently without slacking off. After a long time, his eyes finally became blind.

After Anarud became blind, he had many inconveniences in life. The compassionate Buddha not only sewed three clothes for him, but also taught him to practice the Vajra Illumination Samadhi. Anaruddha practiced in accordance with the Buddha's teachings, and soon achieved clairvoyance.
