Houses in the English countryside: Lin Yutang's ideal of great harmony

-a glimpse of Britain (6)

This blog post was written on 20 10 and recorded my trip to England in the summer of 2002.

Lin Yutang, an old friend and former comrade-in-arms of Lu Xun, told a joke that he thought had spread all over the world:

"The most ideal life in the world is to live in a house in the English countryside, use American water, electricity and gas equipment, have a China chef, marry a Japanese wife and have a French lover." (Lin Yutang's Eighty Readings of Humor).

Lin Yutang is a master of erudition and humor who "comments on cosmic articles with one heart and two feet". The ideal life he described on earth is more understood as describing the highest enjoyment of life by international standards!

During the training in London, the project organizers used the weekend to organize our outing activities. The itinerary of the first activity was originally to go to central London. Shortly after the bus set off from school, it received the message on the road. It happened that the railway workers in London went on strike, and all the public rail transit in Greater London stopped, resulting in traffic chaos and serious traffic jams in the urban area. Dr. Simpson, a young senior lecturer in our school, drove us around. After a little discussion, he made a tentative decision, adjusted his itinerary and led us to visit the distinctive countryside. At this moment, I immediately remembered Lin Yutang's famous saying: "Living in a house in the English countryside."

The car turned to the road leading to the countryside, and after walking for a while, I saw the scenery on the outskirts of the road. Perhaps because of geography and climate, there are green trees and grass everywhere in Britain, whether in the countryside or in the city. We ran a lot of places and couldn't see a clearing bigger than a basketball court.

I came to an unknown town. This old house is said to have an important historical story.

Windmills with a history of 100 years.

Country church. It is said that churches and bars are two indispensable places in the life of ordinary British people.

When I came to another town, I saw many retired grandfathers and old ladies sitting on the roadside, playing with geese and ducks around me, and their lives were very leisurely.

The bar in town.

10 days later, I came to the street of Canterbury town.

On the stream, a swan swims leisurely in the water.

Another week later, I went to Scotland, where the rural scenery was more beautiful.

Loch Lomond in the Scottish lowlands is the largest freshwater lake in Britain. In Scotland, a lake is called a lake.

It is said that the island in the lake has been bought by a rich Japanese.
