Creative background:

When Zhu Shimao and Chen Peisi first collaborated on sketches, they often had disagreements. During the quarrel, Zhu Shimao half-joked that Chen Peisi was only born to play roles of A, B, C and D, while he was born to play leading roles in Fujian Film Studio. They had different backgrounds and different grades. So sometimes he sees things from a higher angle. This also became the prototype of the creation of "Protagonist and Supporting Actor".

In December 1989, Chen Peisi and Zhu Shimao performed the sketch for the first time when visiting the Logistics Department of the Beijing Military Region.

"Protagonist and Supporting Actor" was a program that director Huang Yihe strongly recommended back then, but getting to the Spring Festival Gala was full of twists and turns. In Chen Peisi's view, since the sketch is to let the people celebrate the New Year happily, the sketch should not include political burdens. He asked the traitor he played to play the role of a Communist Party member. This plot was opposed by one group of leaders, but another group of people did not Supported again.

Amidst contradictions and controversies, this program was squeezed into the Spring Festival Gala stage.
