This film describes a real child abuse crime that happened in the quiet rural landscape of Indiana before World War II. In 2007, when the Sundance film was released, the performances of the heroines Elaine Page and catherine keener were highly praised. In the story,/kloc-Sylvia (Elaine Page) and her sister Jenny are fostered by their parents who go out to work in the home of Indian housewife Gertrude (catherine keener). After several weeks, their parents still didn't show up, and the $20 alimony they sent each week was cut off. Gertrude, who has been emotionally unstable, has six children, five of whom were born with her ex-husband, and the youngest son is 22-year-old Andy (james franco) who was born near her home. The eldest daughter Paula is only 19 years old but pregnant with her boyfriend's child. Paula told Sylvia the secret, but Sylvia let it out to protect Paula. So Paula began to accuse Sylvia of all kinds of false "evidence" to her loving mother, and Gertrude decided that this "bad girl" must be punished. When Sylvia's parents came to pick them up, it was too late. Sylvia was locked in a dark basement and suffered all kinds of unimaginable atrocities. Gertrude was not the only one who tortured her, but also her five older children and a boy who knew Sylvia next door.
