Textual research on Mr. Feng, the giant Buddha in Dashan

Qingzhou Giant Buddha was discovered by Mr. Ding Fuli in 1993, and I independently completed the textual research and textual research. Confirmed as 550-577 AD, hand-carved, with a total length of 2,500 meters. According to the thought of Buddhist culture and the practice of Buddhism, its name is correct and accurate only if it is called "Qingzhou Giant Buddha". For example, the well-known "Leshan Giant Buddha" and the "Bamiyan Giant Buddha" in Afghanistan all put place names in front of the "Giant Buddha". Leshan Giant Buddha is 72 meters and Bamiyan Giant Buddha is 67 meters, so it is called "Giant Buddha". Qingzhou Buddha statue is 2500 meters, so it is called "Qingzhou Giant Buddha". However, some people call Qingzhou Buddha by other names, such as "Mountain Buddha", "Sleeping Buddha in Qingzhou", "Nirvana Buddha" and "Carrying Buddha", which are all wrong. First of all, I am a little strange to Buddhist culture, and secondly, my vision is too narrow. All names without the word "Qingzhou", once you leave Qingzhou, no one knows what you are talking about. "Giant Buddha on the Mountain" and "Giant Buddha on the Back" seem to embody some characteristics of Qingzhou Giant Buddha, but in fact they don't understand Buddhist common sense. Regardless of the theory, let's just make an example: If the Buddha statue in longxing temple, Qingzhou is called "stone Buddha", "stone Buddha", "sitting in front" and "standing in front", isn't it easy to make people laugh? As for "sleeping Buddha in Qingzhou" and "Nirvana Buddha", it is even more absurd.

Only the statue representing the death of Sakyamuni is called "the statue of reclining Buddha" or "the statue of nirvana". This kind of Buddha statue has only one pattern for thousands of years. That is, Sakyamuni lies on his right side, with his right hand resting on his right sideburns and his left hand stretched out on his left leg. Is Qingzhou Giant Buddha in this form?

Since we often say that Qingzhou is a famous cultural city, it is best not to make some cultural jokes artificially. Let me introduce the six wonders of Qingzhou Giant Buddha World that I have verified:

First, such a huge Buddha statue can only be seen clearly after it is pointed out on the mountain in the northwest. Even farmers who have lived and worked on the Giant Buddha Mountain for generations have never known the Giant Buddha. It is precisely because of this that the Qingzhou Giant Buddha was able to exist 1400 years without being destroyed. Therefore, this is not only a brilliant Buddhist art, but also a rare treasure.

Second, the Aquarius-shaped bun of Qingzhou Giant Buddha is particularly long, which not only adds ups and downs to the Buddha statue, but also forms a rhythmic beauty, which highlights the solemnity of the Buddha statue and embodies profound Buddhist thoughts. Buddhism believes that the parietal bone of Buddha Sakyamuni is the "head of five wisdom". Qingzhou Giant Buddha combines the top bone and the top bun into one, which symbolizes the highest wisdom of the Buddha. This ingenious idea has created a nearly 700-meter-long Buddha top, which is also amazing all over the world.

Third, the Buddha's eye is called "Buddha's eye" by the Buddhist community. People believe that it has the vision of an enlightened person, full of compassion and wisdom, and can see all the colors in the world clearly. Therefore, the manufacture of the giant Buddha requires careful carving of the Buddha's eyes. In addition to carving the Buddha's eyes accurately and vividly, they also created sunken eye sockets and double eyes. The sunken eye socket, coupled with the emaciated face, shows the emaciated form of Sakyamuni during his penance. Heavy pupil is a rare image of a saint in China culture. Outstanding Shun Di, people think that he is a heavy pupil. The double pupil is embodied in the Buddha statue, which is unique in the world.

Fourth, there are only four forms of ancient Buddhist statues: sitting, standing, walking and nirvana. On the other hand, Qingzhou Giant Buddha is the head in a prone position. This is a rare spectacle of Buddha in the history of Buddhist sculpture. Just this is the visual embodiment of Buddhism. Conventional Buddhist statues are all complete images, which are determined by the pursuit of perfect artistic aesthetics and the idea of Buddhist Excellence. However, the creator of the giant Buddha found another way and only carved a Buddha's head. This is because Buddhism believes that the body and mind are most easily contaminated with earthly dirt and are the gathering places of old age, illness and death. To give up body and mind is to give up dirt and troubles. Therefore, the thinking starting point of carving the head portrait is the profound Buddhist principle.

5. With outstanding wisdom, the sculptor created strange scenes of the giant Buddha's lips opening or closing from different angles. This makes people think that the Buddha is quietly explaining Buddhism to people. Making a statue of a mountain is a miracle, but there is a dynamic miracle here.

6. At the beginning of China's statue, it was the image of the Buddha. For example, the existing Buddha statues of China in the Sixteen Kingdoms period in Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University in the United States have thick beards. Qingzhou Giant Buddha appeared 200 years after the Sixteen Kingdoms. At this time, the Buddha statue has been integrated into the aesthetic concept of China people: the face is round, the facial muscles are soft, and the facial lines are not stiff-the Buddha statue shaped by this aesthetic concept must be feminine. The beard and Adam's apple, which represent male characteristics, naturally disappear. Qingzhou Giant Buddha intentionally shaped a raised Adam's apple and a plump beard. The reason is that Buddhists carved a tantric Buddha statue, which belongs to the tantric part of Buddhism. It is only used to teach my wife to meditate while practicing, and it is not for the world to see. So you don't have to consider the aesthetic habits of the world. At the end of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, such a humanoid Buddha statue appeared, which is another miracle in the history of sculpture in China.

Seven, Qingzhou Buddha did not appear independently. According to the Buddhist concept of "one Buddha was born, and thousands of Buddhas protected him", Buddhist masters designed cave temples on two hills opposite the giant Buddha. Let all the Buddha caves there face the big Buddha, thus forming a strict system of small Buddha to big Buddha and big Buddha to big Buddha. This design idea was gradually realized after Sui and Tang Dynasties. This three-dimensional Buddha circle, which is dominated by giant Buddha and combined with tantric Buddhism, is unique in the world.

These seven wonders not only reflect the magic of the giant Buddha, but also the magic of Qingzhou Buddhist culture, reflecting the creative spirit and incomprehensible wisdom and reason of human beings.
