1968 Tanzanian athlete Avari was crushed and injured at the Mexico City Olympic Games. When he limped across the finish line last with a punctured knee and a dislocated shoulder, tens of thousands of people stood up in silence and thunderous applause lasted for a long time. This scene was later regarded as "the greatest scene in the history of the Olympic Games".
