Sanmen County has been inhabited by human beings since the Neolithic Age. Xia, Shang and Zhou are the land of Ouyue. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it belonged to the State of Yue. In 306 BC, the State of Chu perished and belonged to the State of Chu. During the Qin Dynasty, Sanmen was subordinate to Minzhong County.

Sanmen was liberated in February of 1949, which was the earliest liberated county in Zhejiang province and belonged to Taizhou.
