In 1939, he served as an actor at Guohua Film Company, playing roles in films such as "Song of Tears" and "Three Smiles", and directed films such as "Lonely Soul in the Night". In 1941, he filmed films such as "Gunshots on a Rainy Night" at Shanghai Venus Film Company, and in 1942 he filmed films such as "A Romantic Family" at Zhonglian. Later, he joined the Kuomintang Army Drama Troupe to perform in dramas. He came to Taiwan in 1949 and served as a director and director of the Agricultural Educational Film Company and as the director of the Taichung factory. After 1954, he played roles in films such as "Poppy Flower" and "Wu Feng" produced by the Taiwan Film Studio. In 1993, he won the commemorative award at the 30th "Golden Horse Awards" in Taiwan. He is the author of "Memoirs of Gong Jianong's Filmmaking".

In 1989, Gong Jianong, accompanied by his eldest son Gong Zhuyou, flew back to his hometown of Nanjing, reunited with his wife and five sons after an absence of forty years, and enjoyed family happiness. He originally planned to come to Shanghai to visit his movie friends Shu Shun, Bai Yang, Xuan Jinglin, Zheng Xiaoqiu and others (the latter two are now deceased), but due to time constraints they were unable to do so and hurriedly flew back to Taipei.
