Interview with He Jiangang, an alumnus of Guangdong Experimental Middle School120th Anniversary.
He Jiangang: Class 63, graduated from Architecture Department of South China University of Technology.
Born in March, 1954, chief engineer and professor-level senior engineer.
He is currently the vice president of Guangzhou Civil Architecture Research and Design Institute.
Vice Chairman of Masonry Structure Professional Committee of China Engineering Construction Standardization Association
Member of lightweight aggregate professional Committee of China building materials academic Committee
Director of China Steel Association Concrete Structure Association
Visiting Professor of Chang 'an University
Part-time Master Tutor of Civil Engineering Department of South China University of Technology
Deeply attached to his alma mater, he participated in the design and construction of several provincial junior high school campus buildings.
When we first contacted Mr. He Jiangang, we sent a long short message to introduce the situation of the provincial celebration. While we were still hesitating about the success of this interview, He Laoshi quickly replied with a short message "OK, when?" Honesty and efficiency are our first impressions of He Laoshi.
The interview was held in the Shi Jing Pavilion of the provincial school. There are not many students on the campus on Sunday. You can see the provincial teaching building and experimental building in the museum, as if you can smell the sound of books in the air. He Laoshi, dressed in plain white, is a senior who is several decades older than us, but his every move is full of youth. A friendly smile and unexpected talkativeness suddenly brought us closer.
At that time, the province was solid.
He Laoshi is a provincial student in the class of 63, and both father and son are provincial students. Therefore, he has a particularly deep affection for his alma mater and a deeper understanding of the tradition of saving reality than ordinary people. According to He Laoshi, studying in the province is actually a very glorious thing.
When I was studying in He Laoshi, if I wanted to be admitted to middle school, I had to take the city-wide unified examination. Entering a prestigious school like Shi Sheng is not a simple matter. As a century-old prestigious school, Shi Sheng has better teachers than other schools. Ordinary schools don't offer English, but the English teacher in He Laoshi at that time was actually a famous English film translator in China. This gives He Laoshi and his classmates an advantage over their peers. At that time, many schools did not have a student admitted to the university for several years, but half of the students were able to go to school smoothly, and the gap was opened here. He Laoshi said half-jokingly that after school, students from other middle schools would choose to gather in Yuexiu Mountain to watch the game, while thrifty students continued to study hard, which was what attracted him.
When we asked curiously what was the difference between provincial reality at that time and now, He Laoshi's answer was that many traditions of provincial reality existed at that time. For example, extracurricular scientific research groups, such as radio research groups, biological research groups and so on. At that time, biology class was not just about reading, but sometimes we had to go to the school botanical garden to grow things. It was fun, and students from many provinces took part in various competitions. But at that time, students took part in competitions only because of their interest, unlike now, they all have a "must win" mentality. In short, the idea of all-round development had begun to take root in the province at that time. It can be said that the outstanding performance of the province now also benefits from the enlightenment and efforts of the predecessors.
Look at learning: diligence+comprehensive knowledge+practice
When I was studying in He Laoshi, I had a joke: study hard, study hard, study hard. However, this is also a true portrayal of many students at that time. In He Laoshi's view, it is sometimes necessary to study hard.
He Laoshi was the first batch of graduate students who resumed the college entrance examination after the Cultural Revolution. It's really not easy to go back to school after working for more than ten years. Therefore, it is essential to make more efforts than others. At this time, "dead reading" can be dialectically translated as diligence. "When I was a graduate student, I slept until 1 every night." He Laoshi smiled and recalled the bitter days of graduate school at that time. Due to the influence of the Cultural Revolution, his basic knowledge was relatively weak, so he had to read a lot of information every time he did something, and this habit continued until his work. He Laoshi believes that it is a good way to refer to other people's information and experience when encountering unclear problems. When communicating with others, one's own experience and knowledge can also be accumulated, and long-term accumulation will greatly improve oneself.
Although He Laoshi is diligent in reading, "reading skillfully" seems to occupy a more important position in his life experience. In middle school, reading is a very comfortable thing for him. At that time, there was little pressure to study in the province and little homework. He Laoshi finishes his homework at school every day and goes to the bookstore to read extra-curricular books as soon as school is over. He especially likes science and technology books, and other books are more or less in contact. It is particularly important that He Laoshi does not limit his knowledge.
"Many engineering students always think that economics belongs to liberal arts and has nothing to do with themselves. In fact, this idea is very one-sided. " He Laoshi tried to get in touch with all kinds of books from his school days to his later work. He Laoshi graduated from the Architecture Department of South China University of Technology. But at work, he will participate in various designs, such as the preparation of cement plants and fertilizer plants, and so on. He must have all kinds of knowledge. After retirement, He Laoshi became a legal representative, and he deliberately learned about many legal professions.
