Bride money IOUs

Legal analysis: the state does not support the bad habit of bride price, and paying bride price is not a moral obligation. However, the state does not strongly interfere with people's customary practices. If people creatively invented the "IOU for bride price", the law does not ask whether it is recognized by both parties. If there is a dispute between the two parties afterwards, the law does not recognize such an iou, that is, it is legally invalid.

Legal basis: Article 5 (1) of the Supreme People's Court's Interpretation on the Application of Marriage and Family in the Civil Code of People's Republic of China (PRC), if a party requests to return the bride price paid according to custom, the people's court shall support it if it is found that it belongs to the following circumstances:

(1) Both parties have not gone through the marriage registration formalities;

(2) Both parties have gone through the marriage registration formalities, but they have not lived together;

(3) premarital payment, causing difficulties to the payer.

The application of items 2 and 3 of the preceding paragraph is conditional on the divorce of both parties.
