Jiang Yang's Translation of Don Quixote
1957, the state plans to translate and publish the "Three Series" (i.e. Marxist literary theory series, foreign literary theory series and foreign literary classics series), and set up the "Three Series Editorial Committee". Don Quixote is listed as one of the topics in the "Classic Series of Foreign Literature", and the head of the editorial board is the deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the CPC. Mr Jiang Yang has been studying western novels. The translation and research of Don Quixote is a scientific research project arranged by the Institute. Mr. Wang made a comparative study of three English versions and two French versions of Don Quixote, and found that each of the three versions had its own advantages and disadvantages, so it was difficult to decide which was better. In order to translate and introduce this world literary masterpiece more faithfully, she resolutely decided to translate it directly from Spanish. Mr. Jiang Yang, who is already proficient in English and French, began to study Spanish by himself. She studied Spanish only for translation, and she didn't think it necessary for her to learn spoken English. She is a translator of literary works, not an interpreter. They have different requirements. Jiang Yang began to translate in 1960s. Although the translation work was interrupted several times during the Cultural Revolution, she persisted in teaching herself Spanish. Nearly 20 years later, in May 1977, she submitted the translation of Don Quixote to the Foreign Literature Editorial Department of People's Literature Publishing House. This is the first Chinese translation directly translated from Spanish in China.
Introduction to Don Quixote;
The full name of Don Quixote is La Manque's Biography of Don Quixote, which consists of two books, the first published in 1605 and the second published in 16 15.
The plot of the novel is very strange: Gizano, a young gentleman in a village in La Manque, is nearly fifty years old, tall and thin, with a thin horse and spear, an old shield, a housekeeper in his forties, a niece in his twenties and a helper at home. Generally can maintain life, but not rich. He has a hobby, that is, he likes to read knight novels and is fascinated by them. He doesn't hunt and doesn't care about family affairs. Later, he even sold his land to buy such a book, and told people the truth in the book when he met people. From night to day, from day to night, he talked like this every day, so that his brain gradually dried up and he finally lost his mind. His mind is full of magic, chariots, duels, challenges, injuries, roaming, love, turmoil and all kinds of absurd things in the book. He believes everything written in the book. So I thought, in order to improve his reputation and seek public welfare, he should be a knight errant, put everything he saw in the book into practice, save suffering, experience danger and establish achievements. So he got a horse named Luo Qinan Tuo, which means a once industrious horse. He found out the spear and shield, imagined a country woman as his wife as a knight, and went out of the village to fight bravely and travel around the world.
In the inn, he took the shopkeeper as the owner of the fort and forced him to seal himself. Then the first grievance he encountered was that a rich farmer tortured a little shepherd boy for herding sheep and losing them. Don Quixote was not satisfied. He not only asked the rich peasants to release the shepherd boy, but also asked the rich peasants to pay the nine-month salary they owed to the shepherd boy. The rich man's name is Hao Tuduo. Although he promised at that time, when Ji Hede left, he tied up the little shepherd boy Andreas and beat him up. His battle righteousness is fruitless. Later, he returned home, made an appointment with his neighbor, an honest farmer, Sancho Bossa, invited him to be a squire, and promised to call him the governor of the island in the future. So Sancho, with a dream, rode on a donkey and went with him as a servant to "make contributions". In the two adventures of a ranger, I played countless jokes, such as treating windmills as giants, hotels as castles, exiles as persecuted knights, skins as giants' heads and so on. He has indomitable spirit, and the more frustrated he is, the more brave he is. Finally, the bachelor of Galapagos in the same village pretended to be a knight and knocked him down, letting him go home and live in seclusion for a year. Don Quixote just fulfilled his promise and returned home. Later, he went out as a ranger and did many absurd things with good wishes. Finally, when I lay dying, I woke up rationally and found out the absurdity of my past. I made three wills before I died. First, I used to pay Sancho a sum of money, so I don't have to forget it. I spent the rest of my money on him because he is kind and loyal. Second, all the inheritance belongs to the niece, but if that person wants to read knight literature when he gets married, he should not marry such a person, and all the inheritance should be recovered and allocated to religion as publicity expenses; The third is to apologize to the author of this absurd book, who has a conscience burden for it. Finally, the knight died peacefully.
