On the Effect of Confucian "Cautious Independence" on College Students' Self-discipline

Being cautious and independent is an important concept of Confucianism. Being cautious and independent pays attention to the cultivation of personal moral level and values the integrity of personal conduct, which is the highest realm of Confucian style. For its meaning, people generally understand it as "when you are alone and no one is paying attention, you should be cautious in your behavior", "Ci Hai" or "Be cautious when you are alone" and "Ci Yuan".

You might as well look at the world with wisdom. Everyone is silent, doesn't cry, doesn't laugh, doesn't feel sad and doesn't grieve. To meet this person for the first time, he sits next to him, and there is nothing extraordinary about it. However, this person exudes a magnetic field, which is full of righteousness. People who are under pressure are breathless, and only by taking the lead in breaking the atmosphere can they be relieved. Who is this, it must be a collection of "five elements of Confucianism, benevolence, courtesy, wisdom and holiness, sincerity in China, shape in the outside, and self-cultivation of internal and external moral conduct."

In the original "University", there is a passage that says, "It's bad for a villain to stay idle", which means that a villain likes to do bad things at ordinary times, but when he meets someone who is cautious and independent, he tries to disguise himself, "covering up his bad things and focusing on his good ones." However, people's hearts and appearances are often consistent, and bad ideas can always be shown in their behaviors. "People regard themselves as their lungs and livers", which can't be disguised by force. Only when they are as sincere as those who are cautious, can they be "external", and "sincere in the middle and external" is a main meaning of cautious independence.

The Confucian explanation for cautious independence is: "Being able to be one, being able to speak in many ways is one; Those who take many as one can say that they can take five as one. " "Be cautious about being alone, and be cautious about your heart. If you are alone and then one, one will be one, and five will be one, and then you will get it. " "Benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom" is the fifth, which is the most important of Confucian style, and is commonly known as "Five Elements of Confucian Style".

according to the regulation of "Five Elements of Confucianism", it is five kinds of "moral trips" that "form is inside". Although benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom are "shaped from the inside" and formed in the heart, they are still suspected of being "multiple" and have not really been unified in the heart. Therefore, it is necessary to abandon the external differences in the form of benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom, regard them as an organic whole, and truly unify them in the heart. Therefore, it is said that "one is also, and five husbands are also United as one." Therefore, the cautious independence here actually refers to the inner concentration and single-mindedness, specifically, it refers to the state of inner concentration on five kinds of "moral trips" of benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom.

Being cautious and independent is a sentiment; Being cautious and independent is a kind of cultivation; Cautious independence is a kind of self-discipline; Being cautious and independent is a kind of magnanimity. The so-called "cautious independence" means that people act according to certain moral norms with a high degree of consciousness when they are alone and unsupervised. University education, moral education first, consciously being cautious and independent, is helpful for college students to cultivate people and grow up healthily!

To be cautious and independent, we need to consider the following aspects:

First, establish and strengthen consciousness norms. In the real university campus, there are still "subconscious" behaviors. For example, on the way to class, students bypass the curved cement road and go straight through the lawn for a shortcut. Even if there is no one around, XX students are used to "walking" from the edge of the grass! China educates students to care for flowers and plants since childhood, and warm slogans such as "Grass also has life" have been engraved in the psychology of contemporary college students. Maybe XX students think that everyone does this. Is it not in line with the "main theme" for me to do this? What is the "main melody"? Is "following the crowd" the right part of values? Therefore, in view of similar "private behaviors", it is really necessary to make contemporary college students really match their words and deeds in public and in private.

Second, students should adapt and get used to the time alone. Contemporary college students, especially freshmen, obviously have lonely groups, because it is difficult to adapt to the new natural and humanistic environment for a while. In this case, the appropriate time to take the necessary ideological intervention education, on the one hand, correctly guide them to adapt to the new learning methods and interpersonal relationships in the university hall, on the other hand, guide them to endure the time of solitude and be true to themselves.

Third, being alone can't avoid loneliness, but it is a good time to calm down and reflect on the gains and losses of the past week or so. Summarizing the past is a necessary condition for grasping the present and planning the future. In an unsupervised and undisturbed environment, everyone can be their true selves. Let the true self slowly cultivate to conform to the moral code of conduct!

A gentleman is cautious about independence. I think it means that there is nothing wrong with his words and deeds, but from the perspective of life, it has another meaning. "Cautious about independence" means that when you are alone, you should be cautious, have no evil thoughts and don't relax mentally. There are many temptations in life in the 21st century, and most of them are more magical when they are "alone".
