Who wrote this? The words on the gate of Zhangjiakou
At the northern end of Zhangjiakou City, there is a famous Great Wall pass - Dajingmen. Dajingmen is famous for its majesty and steepness. Above the city gate are inscribed "Great Rivers and Mountains" in four large Chinese characters, which are vigorous and powerful and are praised by the world.
The author of the four words "Great Rivers and Mountains" is Gao Weiyue. Gao Weiyue, courtesy name Ziqin, was born in Jin County (now Linghai City), Liaoning Province in 1875 (the first year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty). He joined the army in 1900 and served as secretary of the patrol camp of General Zhu Qinglan. In 1907, he entered the infantry department of the second class of the Tongguo Army Accelerated School in Baoding. After graduation, he returned to Northeast China and coincided with the reorganization of the Fengtian Patrol Battalion, so he served as the sentry commander and sentry officer in the Sun Liechen Front Patrol Team. In 1912, he entered the Infantry Department of the Northeast Army Lecture Hall to study. After graduation, he served as the Chief of Education of the Officers and Sergeants' Corps, and later as the Chief of Staff of the 27th Fengjun Division. In July 1921, he served as the commander of the 107th Regiment of the 54th Brigade of the 27th Division of the Fengjun Army, and later as the commander of the 53rd Brigade. In 1923, he served as the commander of the 19th Northeast Mixed Brigade. In 1925, he served as the commander of the 7th Division of the Northeast Army. In 1926, he served as the commander of the 9th Army of the Third and Fourth Front Army of the Anguo Army. In August of the same year, he was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the Chahar Special Region. The Metropolitan Government Office was located in Zhangjiakou.
In 1927, Gao Weiyue wrote the four words "Great Rivers and Mountains" for Dajingmen that have been passed down to this day.
When Gao Weiyue took office, the people of Chahar had no good impression of Fengjun. They believed that many of Fengjun's leaders came from rough backgrounds and that military discipline and conduct must be bad. However, people soon discovered that Gao Weiyue was very strict in managing the army. He often conducted private investigations in secret, and those found to cause trouble would be severely punished. Because Gao Weiyue punished the soldiers who made mistakes, he was nicknamed "Gao Er Da Ye".
