Contents of the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement

China and Japan issued the following joint statement:

The two sides believe that after the end of the Cold War, the world is undergoing major changes in the direction of establishing a new international order. With the further globalization of economy, interdependence has deepened. Progress has been made in security dialogue and cooperation. Peace and development are still the primary problems facing human society. It has become the common aspiration of the international community to establish a just and reasonable new international political and economic order and seek a more stable international peace environment in the 2/kloc-0 century.

The two sides confirmed that mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, peaceful coexistence and the norms of the UN Charter are the basic norms for handling state-to-state relations.

The two sides positively evaluated the efforts made by the United Nations in safeguarding world peace and promoting world economic and social development, and believed that the United Nations should play an important role in establishing and maintaining a new international order. The two sides are in favor of reforming the United Nations, including the Security Council, so that the work and decision-making process of the United Nations can better reflect the common aspirations and collective will of all Member States.

The two sides advocate the complete destruction of nuclear weapons and oppose the proliferation of nuclear weapons in any form. Call on the countries concerned to stop all nuclear tests and nuclear arms races and contribute to peace and stability in the Asian region and the world.

The two sides believe that China and Japan, as influential countries in Asia and the world, have important responsibilities in maintaining peace and promoting development. The two sides will strengthen coordination and cooperation in international political, economic and global issues, and make positive contributions to the cause of world peace and development and human progress.

The two sides believe that after the end of the Cold War, the situation in Asia has continued to move towards stability and regional cooperation has been deepening. We believe that the influence of the Asian region in world political, economic and security affairs will be further enhanced and will play an important role in the next century.

The two sides reiterated that maintaining regional peace and promoting regional development are the unshakable basic policies of the two countries. The two sides do not seek hegemony in the region, do not use force or threaten to use force, and advocate peaceful settlement of all disputes.

The two sides are highly concerned about the current East Asian financial crisis and the difficulties it has brought to Asia. At the same time, we also recognize that the economic foundation of this region is solid, and believe that by summing up experience, rationally adjusting and reforming, and strengthening regional and international coordination and cooperation, the Asian economy will certainly overcome difficulties and continue to develop. Both sides agreed that they should respond to the challenges with a positive attitude and make due efforts to promote the economic development of the region.

The two sides believe that stable relations between major countries in the Asia-Pacific region are very important for peace and stability in the region. The two sides will actively participate in the multilateral activities of the ASEAN Regional Forum, carry out coordination and cooperation, and support all measures conducive to enhancing understanding and strengthening trust.

The two sides reviewed with satisfaction the rapid development of bilateral relations in politics, economy, culture and personnel exchanges since the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. Everyone agrees that under the current situation, the importance of cooperation between the two countries has further increased. Constantly consolidating and developing Sino-Japanese friendly cooperation conforms to the fundamental interests of the two peoples and will also make positive contributions to peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. The two sides confirmed that Sino-Japanese relations are one of the most important bilateral relations between the two countries, deeply recognized the role and responsibility of the two countries in peace and development, and announced the establishment of a friendly and cooperative partnership oriented to the 26 th century.
