A preliminary study on the English language proficiency test of primary school students

Wang Jianfeng Suzhou Wuzhong District Mudu Experimental Primary School

The primary school English proficiency test should pay attention to both scientificity and comprehensiveness. The author believes that it should be carried out from the following aspects.

1. Oral test

As a language, a foreign language, like other languages, is produced by communication, and its primary function is to communicate with each other (both language and speech mean "speaking"). Therefore, the foreign language proficiency test of primary school students should conform to the actual situation of language use, and test the listening and speaking ability and oral expression ability of primary school students in the form of oral communication.

First, the oral test method

There is no doubt about the necessity of oral examination, but what kind of examination method is very important in the face of a large number of primary school students. At present, oral test can be roughly divided into three categories: direct oral test, indirect oral test and semi-direct oral test.

(1) The direct oral examination is a face-to-face test, including simple question and answer, discussion, dialogue and interview. The current CET-4 and CET-6 oral tests fall into this category. This test has high validity and is an ideal way of oral examination. However, due to the large number of primary school students and the relative shortage of English teachers, it is not suitable for oral examination for primary school students.

(2) Paper-and-pencil test mainly refers to written test and oral test. Although this kind of test has high reliability, its validity is very low, which also violates the theory of modern language testing and is not desirable.

(3) The semi-direct oral test is also called the recorded oral test, that is, the questions are recorded on the tape in advance, so that primary school students can answer the questions on the tape orally. Doing so can not only maintain the reliability of indirect oral examination, but also maintain the communication and effectiveness of direct oral examination. Its advantages are that a large number of students can take the exam at the same time, saving manpower and material resources; The development of primary school students' oral English level is not affected by the examiner's language level and mood; The same test questions ensure the reliability of the test; Grading can be done by professionals at a convenient time and a comfortable place, which is an ideal oral test method suitable for primary school students.

In the process of operation, pre-test training should be given to primary school students in advance, so that they can be familiar with the test operation process, and at the same time, the quality of recording equipment and tapes should be improved to avoid inevitable losses.

B, oral objects and requirements

The oral test target is primary school graduates who are about to enter middle school after learning primary school English; The content of the test and the difficulty of the test questions are set according to the general requirements of the English Curriculum Standard for oral ability in the basic stage. Students are required to answer the contents of textbooks and general listening materials, to have ordinary daily conversations in English, to simply describe something or people, to clearly express their thoughts, and to have correct language intonation.

C, oral content

(1) Warm-up questions: Ask some common daily communication terms or questions to primary school students, and examine their mastery of vocabulary and daily communication terms and their adaptability.

(2) Reading aloud: primary school students are required to read a specified essay, and the vocabulary and grammar related knowledge in the essay cannot exceed the general requirements of the syllabus, so as to test the reading ability and pronunciation and intonation of primary school students.

(3) Picture description: Show pictures, let pupils describe the contents of pictures or organize a dialogue to test pupils' oral expression ability and imagination.

(4) Speaking continuously on the topic of daily life and social life: Give students a topic and let them comment freely, so as to test pupils' logical thinking ability and language organization ability.

D, oral test scoring method

(1) Ability analysis score: score the pupils' oral expression ability from three aspects: pronunciation, vocabulary and fluency, and then calculate the total score of the export test according to the scores in all aspects. Oral English ability is divided into five items, and each item is given a specific scoring standard. As shown in table 1:

2. written test

First, the scope and content of writing

The scope of the test can be set according to the vocabulary and related knowledge required by the English syllabus for primary school students; The examination content can be divided into two parts: listening part and writing part (including vocabulary, related grammar knowledge, reading and writing)

B, written form

The listening part can take the form of multiple-choice questions and dictation or dictation to fill in the blanks, and examine listening ability and related knowledge and skills (such as vocabulary, writing, pronunciation knowledge, etc.). ) primary school students.

The written part is more diverse than the listening part.

(1) Fill in the blanks and multiple-choice questions can be used to test students' vocabulary mastery and related grammar knowledge.

(2) In the reading part, students can either adopt the traditional multiple-choice form or ask them to rearrange sentences after disrupting the logical order of the article, so as to test their reading comprehension, logical judgment and reasoning ability.

(3) We can also change the traditional cloze test into a language application test, such as providing the first letter or root of the correct answer, instead of providing options in the blank, so that students must know the context and the correct word form to score, reducing the possibility of students scoring by guessing the answer.

(4) In the writing part, in addition to writing short articles according to the topic, you can also try to rewrite, make sentences, look at pictures and write dialogues. Especially looking at pictures and writing dialogues can not only test students' writing ability, but also give full play to students' creative imagination, which is suitable for the age characteristics of primary school students.

C, written test results

The written test score is 100, the listening part can account for 20-30 points, and the written test part can account for 70-80 points. Objective test scores (such as multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, ranking order, etc. ) The written test scores should reasonably match the subjective test scores (such as making sentences, looking at pictures and writing dialogues, and writing compositions according to the topics, etc. ).

In the whole proficiency test, both oral and written tests should be given equal attention and not biased. Ignoring or belittling any of them will affect the smooth formation of primary school students' foreign language ability. As for how to pay equal attention to both, we can measure the foreign language ability of primary school students by multiplying the scores of these two parts by their percentages (50%) and then adding them up. It is worth noting that the foreign language proficiency test of primary school students should reflect communicative characteristics. The examination method must be people-oriented, the examination task should be user-oriented, the real level of primary school students should be measured, and the Chinese level of primary school students should be comprehensively investigated, so we can't draw a conclusion just by a test paper.
