The predecessor of Waseda University can be traced back to Tokyo Vocational School opened in 1882. It was renamed Waseda University in 1902. The founder was Shigenobu Ogai. Seven of the previous Japanese Prime Ministers are graduates of Waseda University, and nearly one-third of the members of Congress are from Waseda University. The founders and presidents of many famous companies such as Sony, Casio, Samsung, Nintendo, and Uniqlo were all graduated from Waseda University.
To date, 30 alumni have become winners of the Akutagawa Prize, Japan’s highest literary award, ranking first in Japan.
