The predecessor of Waseda University can be traced back to Tokyo Vocational School opened in 1882. It was renamed Waseda University in 1902. The founder was Shigenobu Ogai. To date, 30 alumni have become winners of the Akutagawa Prize, Japan’s highest literary award, ranking first in Japan.
