Who ranked first in the Sanshou competition at the first National Games of the Republic of China?
According to historical records, the first National Games of the Republic of China began from October 18 to 22, 1910. The American missionary Exner initiated the "First Sports League of National School District Teams" through the Shanghai YMCA. "Held at Nanyang Qunyechang, Nanjing. The documents of the conference are all in English, measurements are in imperial system, and the equipment and clothing are also of foreign standards. The competition consists of four events: track and field, football, tennis and basketball. Track and field includes 50-yard, 100-yard, 220-yard, 440-yard, 880-yard runs, as well as 120-yard low hurdles, 880-yard relay, high jump, long jump, pole vault, shot put, hammer throw and other twelve individual events. The competition was divided into three groups: high school, middle school and school. 140 athletes from five districts (indicated by green, red, purple, blue and yellow respectively) from North China, Shanghai, South China, Wuning (Suzhou and Nanjing) and Wuhan participated. Shanghai District won the first place in the overall score, and Shanghai St. John's University won the first place in the school group. This Games was posthumously recognized as the First National Games after the Revolution of 1911. In other words, there was no Sanshou event in the first National Games of the Republic of China. It was not until the Fifth National Games in 1933 that Chinese martial arts was added. The Fifth National Games has gone through ups and downs. It was originally scheduled to be held on October 10, 1931 in the newly completed Central Stadium, known as the "No. 1 in the Far East", in the eastern suburbs of the capital Nanjing. Unexpectedly, the "September June 18th" incident suddenly occurred in September 1931, followed by the "September June December 18th" Songhu Anti-Japanese War in January 1932, which postponed the National Games to October 1933. It won't be held until the 10th. However, this sports meeting attracted great attention from people across the country, with as many as 2,248 athletes participating. The Fifth National Games was hosted by the National Government Organization Preparatory Committee. Zhang Xinfu, Director-General of the Conference, and Wu Yunrui, Deputy Director-General, participated in 33 units and 2,697 athletes. In addition to the same competition items as the previous session, women's swimming and softball will be added. The results of the competition broke 21 national records in track and field and 4 swimming events, and Shanghai won the overall championship in this Games. For this sports meeting, Ye Qianyu of Shanghai Times Book Company edited a special issue, which was finely printed on coated paper and distributed by the famous painter Zhang Guangyu. This National Games included "Guoshu" (Chinese martial arts) as a competition event for the first time. The Peking and Nanjing teams won the men's and women's "Guoshu" team championships respectively. Liu Changchun of Liaoning's men's 100-meter run set a record in the Republic of China with a time of 10.7 seconds, and was close to the world record at the time.
