Three stages of learning Buddhism
Simply put, Buddhism is divided into the vehicle of human and heaven, the vehicle of liberation, and the vehicle of Bodhisattva. The vehicle of human and heaven is to walk the path of human and heaven; the vehicle of liberation is to free ourselves from physical and mental troubles and take the path of escaping from the world; the vehicle of Bodhisattva is to have great compassion and great wishes! We must have the spirit of being born into the world and rescuing people in need. Just three stages.
1. The vehicle of man and heaven is the foundation
What is the first step in learning Buddhism? This is the foundation of the path between man and heaven. It also contains the following content:
1. Take refuge in the Three Jewels
To follow the path of human and heavenly vehicles, you must first take refuge in the Three Jewels, the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. What is the purpose of taking refuge in Buddha, Dharma and Sangha treasures? Taking refuge in the Buddha is the path that leads you to enlightenment, from confusion to enlightenment. You were originally in a delusion, so that you can wake up and transition from delusion to awakening. "The Buddha is enlightened." A Buddha is a saint who has awakened to the truth!
What about the magic weapon of refuge? It means that you have wisdom, turn from evil to righteousness, and follow the right path. People have to follow the right path. It’s impossible not to follow the right path! Don't take evil paths, don't take evil paths. Therefore, we must learn the magic weapon. The magic weapon is to have sufficient reasons and rich theories to guide you on this path. We must learn theories and practice methods.
The Sangha Treasure means that the Sangha can preach on behalf of the Buddha. If the Buddha is not alive, the Sangha Treasure will inherit and promote the Buddha's Dharma. Monk Bao, he focuses on virtue and he must abide by the precepts. What is the meaning of taking refuge in the Sangha? It is to turn us from evil to good, from defilement to purity. Don't take the evil path, but the good path; don't let your heart be polluted, but be pure, and turn from pollution to purity. In this way, there will be high morals and improved rationality.
This is the purpose of taking refuge in the Three Jewels. It is not like people say to kowtow to the Bodhisattva and ask for something. That's not what it means.
2. Understand causes and effects
After taking refuge, you must understand the truth and the principles of cause and effect. It is the cause, condition, and effect mentioned earlier. If you understand cause and effect, you can guide your behavior, refrain from doing evil, and practice good deeds.
3. Follow the Five Precepts and Ten Good Deeds
Practicing the Five Precepts and Ten Good Deeds is necessary in practical actions. Do not kill, do not steal, do not engage in sexual misconduct, do not lie, and do not drink alcohol. These are the basic principles.
Avoid killing means to cultivate compassion and not to kill living beings. According to Buddhist law of cause and effect, if you kill him, he will kill you in the future! Moreover, there are too many fights and killings in this world, which affects everyone's stability, destroys tranquility, and endangers lives, which is the worst thing. So we should abstain from killing animals. For you lay people, this is the first requirement. If you can't be a vegetarian, you can still learn to eat Huazhai; if you can't eat Huazhai, then you can eat Sanjing meat. What is three pure meats? That means killing without seeing, hearing, or suspecting killing. Eyes did not see it, ears did not hear it. It was not killing specifically for me. If you really want to eat meat, you can buy it ready-made, but don’t kill it. Not only don’t you kill it yourself, but you also don’t ask others to kill it, and don’t take pleasure in seeing it killed.
In our Chinese history, among Chinese scholars and scholars, some officials were vegetarians. Bai Juyi, Liu Zongyuan and Wang Wei in the Tang Dynasty were all vegetarians. Since the Republic of China, many literati such as Feng Zikai and Xia Chuzun have been vegetarians. Feng Zikai has a comic collection "Anthology of Nursing Life", which advocates quitting killing and releasing animals. This is a good thing! If you can't be a vegetarian, you should at least abstain from killing.
Don’t steal, don’t take a penny from other people’s things, including don’t embezzle, don’t steal, don’t cheat, etc.
Don’t engage in sexual immorality. For lay people, stay monogamous, don’t mess with relationships between men and women, and don’t destroy other people’s marriages and families.
Do not lie, including four types. First, don’t lie and be truthful to others; second, don’t say words that sow discord and cause conflicts; third, don’t say harsh words to hurt others; fourth, don’t say flattering words, which are obscene and vulgar words. What language does Buddhism advocate? It is a word of truth, a word of uprightness, a word of harmony, a word of comfort.
Don’t drink alcohol, why? Because alcohol is promiscuous. It is a kind of atonement. What is atonement? Killing, stealing, sexual intercourse, and delusion are sins in themselves, and they are sexual sins. Alcohol itself is not a sin, it depends on how you use it. For example, making medicinal wine can harmonize qi and blood and remove rheumatism. Therefore, it is called the covering precept. It covers you. First, it prevents you from drinking. In addition, even if you want to drink, just drink medicinal wine, or drink an appropriate amount to reconcile the qi and blood. This is called the covering precept. Therefore, if this precept is open, it is best not to drink.
This alcohol abstinence also includes narcotic substances, such as opium cigarettes, white powder, etc., which cannot be eaten and must be prohibited.
The above is the content of the five precepts. You all think about how wonderful this is. You must behave like this as a human being. This is basic morality. If we achieve this, our families will be harmonious, our society will be orderly, and our country will be stable. That’s for sure! Why do we say that our country’s construction is always failing? Why do so many companies close down? Why can't some groups be maintained? That is, some individuals embezzle and steal, and do whatever it takes for their own personal gain, causing a lot of chaos to society. How wonderful it would be if everyone knew the principles of these five precepts and followed them! Then, the family will be harmonious, the group will be consolidated, and the society will be stable. How wonderful! This is the basic morality advocated by Buddhism.
To sum up, the three contents mentioned above: taking refuge in the Three Jewels, understanding the cause and effect, and adhering to the Five Precepts, are the basis of the human-heaven vehicle. That is to say, when you are an individual, you must complete your personality. Because if you do this, Just like building a high-rise building, you must have a solid foundation. Only when you have a foundation can you build a high-rise building. If you can't do it well as a human being, how can you become a Buddha? Huh? This is the first step.
2. Purify the body and mind by practicing liberation
The next step is to purify the body and mind and seek liberation of the body and mind. In Buddhism, it is necessary to practice. Precepts, concentration, and wisdom. Use the three disciplines to improve one's self-cultivation, eliminate impurities in the body and mind, and make the body and mind pure. This is the path to liberation. In Buddhism, the highest achievement of cultivating the path to liberation is Arhat. .
3. Practicing the Bodhisattva Vehicle to Save Suffering
Bodhisattva is the spirit of the Mahayana, the way of the great masters, that is, transcending the world and entering into the world, and doing things in the world with the spirit of transcending the world. What? We must have great wisdom, initiate bodhicitta with the great wisdom of selflessness, and initiate the great compassion and the great compassionate wish to save suffering. The four great bodhisattvas in Buddhism, Guanyin, Samantabhadra, Manjusri, and Ksitigarbha, are all representatives of the practice of Bodhisattva. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva represents great compassion, Manjusri Bodhisattva represents great wisdom, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva represents great vows, and Samantabhadra represents great aspirations and actions. All Bodhisattvas take the Bodhisattva precepts and practice Bodhisattva. Action is inseparable from these four words. You must have compassion; you must have wisdom, the highest wisdom; you must have the power of aspiration; you must have action. Compassion, wisdom, aspiration, and action must be combined to become a Bodhisattva. Only by using the spirit of transcending the world can we save all sentient beings, benefit all sentient beings, and practice the Mahayana Bodhisattva path. This is the cause of becoming a Buddha. The result is that Buddhahood can be achieved, so becoming a Buddha comes from achieving sentient beings.
To become a Buddha, you must solve the problems of the masses and solve the sufferings of the masses. Only by having such a big heart and such a great spirit can you achieve the Buddha's path. The whole world and all sentient beings are the premise. These are all in my heart, and I am completely connected with them. The pain of all sentient beings is my pain, and the happiness of all sentient beings is my happiness. In Buddhism, it is called unconditional compassion and unconditional compassion. Compassion means that when we save people in distress, we should not distinguish between objects. Not caring about the object is called compassion. What is compassion for the same body? The pain of all living beings is my pain, and the happiness of all living beings is my happiness. I and all living beings are one and cannot be separated. It’s called compassion. This is the spirit of Bodhisattva, the conduct of Bodhisattva, and the wisdom of Bodhisattva. Therefore, learning Buddhism is to hope that everyone can learn from Bodhisattva.
I went to South Korea and Southeast Asia, and there are radio stations and TV stations in South Korea. It is run by Buddhists. What is its slogan? "May everyone become a Bodhisattva, and may everyone learn to be a Bodhisattva." Think about it, everyone. If you all learn from the Bodhisattva, it can be said that if everyone has reason and compassion, then war will not break out in the world and eternal peace can be maintained. That is the pure land of the world. Therefore, the purpose of learning Bodhisattva in Buddhism is to solemnize the land and benefit sentient beings. This is the big purpose. A majestic land benefits sentient beings; purifying the soul also purifies the world. This is the highest purpose of learning Bodhisattva and the purpose of learning Buddhism.
