According to North Korean official propaganda materials, Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1942 in the "Baekdu Mountain Secret Camp" in Samjiyon County, Yanggang Province, North Korea. According to official records: "In the early morning of February 16, the sky was clear. The wooden houses in the anti-Japanese guerrilla camp and the dense forest were all covered with silver-white snow. Two gorgeous rainbows and a holy star appeared instantly. (The Star of Light) announced his arrival, and suddenly a magpie flew over - a leader who would save all mankind in the future - Kim Jong Il was born! "When Kim Jong Il was three and a half years old, his father Kim Il Sung took the lead! defeated the Japanese invaders, advanced to Pyongyang, and liberated the Japanese-occupied Korean Peninsula. In the 1980s, Kim Il-sung inspected the Paektu Mountain area and named one of the peaks "Jongil Peak" (pictured on the right). "Jongil Peak" has three Korean characters and consists of six two-meter-square granites. It is made of stone slabs hoisted together.

The revolutionary slogans written by members of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army during the anti-Japanese armed struggle are still preserved near the secret camp. Although it took half a century, the handwriting is still clear today. With great excitement, they praised the birth of Comrade Kim Jong Il as the birth of a bright star and the great luck of the nation. The main slogans include "Baektu Mountain General's Star Shines Three Thousand Miles Away", "Baektu Mountain descends to the general who uses the shaki method", "Our nation is the first nation in the world to give birth to General Kim Il Sung", "North Korea, nation, Call out, praise, the birth of General Kim Jong Il", "The successor of General Kim Il Sung was born in Paektu Mountain", "Ah! North Korea, the Baekdukwang star is born!" etc.

In front of the former residence of Comrade Kim Jong Il in the secret camp of Mount Paektu, there is also a monument that eulogizes poems. The hymn was written by the great leader Chairman Kim Il Sung on the occasion of Comrade Kim Jong Il's 50th birthday.

In 1976, North Korea published "The Great General Kim Il Sung's Anti-Japanese Organization Revolutionary Struggle" "Regional Map", on the map, at the southern foot of Mount Paektu, which is now the location of the so-called "Baekdu Mountain Secret Camp", there is no mark on the command post of the secret camp.

In the current resume of Kim Il-sung officially released by North Korea, there is no explanation of the whereabouts of Kim Jong-il's father, Kim Il-sung, from 1940 to 1942.

On February 16, 1982, on the occasion of Kim Jong Il’s 41st birthday, North Korean officials publicized for the first time on a large scale that Kim Jong Il was born in a secret camp on Mount Paektu. A series of items such as slogan trees, birth room furnishings, and living utensils were even arranged into the Baekdu Mountain secret camp birthplace for people to visit. According to records from declassified documents of the former Soviet Union, Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1941, in the Vyatskoye military camp near Khabarovsk (Burli).

At that time, his father Kim Il Sung served as the battalion commander of the Independent 88th Infantry Brigade of the Soviet Far East Front (also known as the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces Teaching Brigade).

Kim Jong Il did not return to North Korea with his father until 1945.

Kim Jong-il's Russian name when he was a child was Yuri Irsenovich Kim (Russian: Юрий Ирсенович Ким, English: Yuri Irsenovich Kim).
