U.S. F- 1 Foreign Student Visa Off-campus Work Regulations

Remind overseas students that students holding an American F/ 1 international student visa are subject to federal law.

Come to America to study.

Students are allowed to study and research in the United States. They must prove that they can afford to study and live before entering the country, so they should not be expected to be allowed to work outside the school.

Serious economic difficulties or emergency environment

Students will only be allowed to work outside the school if they encounter "serious financial difficulties" after entering the school or under the "emergency environment" stipulated by the Department of Homeland Security.

Good grades

Students must be in school for at least one academic year, and their academic performance is good, so they cannot get the opportunity of "working on campus"; Or the salary of "working on campus" is not enough to meet the economic needs of students. Only under these circumstances can they be allowed to work outside the school.

No more than 20 hours a week.

Off-campus working hours shall not exceed 20 hours per week.

Validity period of authorized off-campus work

Off-campus work authorization is usually valid for one year. If students work outside the school, they can't continue to work if the time limit allowed for them to work has passed. F- 1 Students should apply to the Citizenship and Immigration Department for renewal of the EAD card within 6 months to 90 days before the expiration of the Authorized Employment Card.
