How many Pokémon movies are there?

As of 2019, there are twenty-three theatrical versions.

They are:

1. "Pokémon: Mewtwo's Counterattack", released on July 18, 1998, is directed by the chief director of the "Pokémon" animated series Japanese animated film directed by Yuyama Kunihiko. This is the first theatrical version of the "Pokémon" animated series.

2. "Pokémon: The Fantasy: Lugia Explosion?", released on July 17, 1999, is the second theatrical version of the Pokémon series. Supplements the scene setting of the Orange Islands in the original animation, and introduces several new Pokémon including Lugia and King Hippo.

The Pokémon movies have been released at a rate of one per year since 1998, all during the summer vacation. The story focuses on legendary Pokémon.

For the sake of story continuity, when each movie was released, Ash's friends and accompanying Pokémon were consistent with the TV animation broadcast at that time.
