On August 2, 2000, Hubei Medical University merged with Wuhan University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Wuhan University to form the new Wuhan University. The hospital was renamed "Wuhan University People's Hospital" and the name of Hubei Provincial People's Hospital was retained.
